Utah!

Thanks for the birthday wishes! It was a fantastic day.

Lisa, I didn't know your birthday was on the 4th. That's my youngest son's birthday. Happy Belated Birthday!

DesertSprings, your setup is awesome. I'd love to see pictures of your legbars. Where did you get your stock from? I have one hen and one rooster. I am interested in trading eggs with someone else because I want another hen or two, but don't want them to be the offspring of my current pair.

Dalarooshens, sounds like your hatch is going really well. Hope you have tons of adorable babies. I wanted to go to chickenstock, and then I realized I'd signed up for a 50 mile bicycle ride that day, so I'm committed to that.

Red, yay on the greenhouse!!! I have a struggling herb garden. It doesn't get enough water. I think I'm going to make dh do something with the sprinklers so it has a dedicated line or something. The previous owners had put a tam there, and I suspect they don't need nearly as much water.

I still have my chicks. There's two different families from the preschool who want them, but I need to get in touch with them. I feel about 95% confident that the polish fathered my hamburg chick. She seems to have the start of a poof. Not a very good one but definitely something there.

Hi guys!!   Stopped by to say hi again!!!

Always lots going on here in the UT thread... how many of you are coming to chickenstock???

I have lots of EE chicks available, some of them are SBELS that I will have at chickenstock,   Looking like I will have a handful of started EE pullets as well, woohoo!!

Lots of my OE and bantam easter egger chicks are hatching out blue, they are sooo cute!!  I have some hatching today... 6 out so far with 7 more pipped/zipping, can't wait to see what decides to come out during the night...

Love all the cute chick pics, and I am still LOLing that Lisa decided to keep a rooster, that is awesome!!

Hi to all the new peeps and sorry I'm sooo behind...

Where did you get your SBELS ? I may bite on those, my hatch was a total bust. Cyndiloohoo was maybe wanting some too, I could pick some up if she wants them....

Finally have some pics of my brooders!!! YAY!!!

And some of my feathered friends inside...lol.

the snow is finally melting and everybody wants out!!!! (this pic is on next post next, wouldn't post here).

been working on separate runs to get each breed apart for pure eggs... as you can see, the orps, aussies and hybrid Ameracaunas are still together. The true Ameracaunas, Speckled Sussex, Barred Hollands, Welsummers, Legbar and Delaware are in their own coops awaiting for the runs to be finished. (This pic is on next post... wouldn't post here).

Busy, busy, busy!!!

Looks like you may have a boy on the left there? I love your brooder setup! And I am SO jealous of your guineas! Awwww!! I want guinea fowl, but I'd feel much better if I was on a lot of land, first. Roosters are one thing that may annoy my neighbors. I can imagine that I'd get lynched if I had guineas

But still, jealous.

Sphinx, that PolishX is very striking.

Hi Sphinx!!

I've had some rough luck with my Legbars.... I received two (hen and roo) that were originally hatched from eggs sent straight from England. The roo was not breeding/show quality...his comb was too large and I had to continually clean his nostrils and face, as it totally covered it!!! He developed a respiratory problem during the coldest part of this year's crazy winter, that even antibiotics couldn't overcome.

And the hen never laid a single egg!!

I picked up another roo (beautiful and only 6 months old) up in Blackfoot (yes, drove up and back for it...lol). He came from Greenfire hatching eggs and when I got him home I quarantined him for a short while and in he went with the new 'wife'. Well, to make a long story short, he was a horn dog, and she wasn't used to having to deal with a roo so much, since her other one was unable to do anything because of his breathing problem. I separated them and put her on some supplements. She started pulling out of it and laying, so I put her back, along with a couple Welsummer hens. I wish I'd had my old incubator set up!!! She laid three eggs total, in three days, but I found them when they were super cold!! She then started exhibiting what looked like seizures. I once again separated her but she slowly, then quickly went downhill. Antibiotics from the vet didn't even help!!

I'm now waiting to get my new incubator and will then try and find some eggs which do not come from Greenfire stock, to broaden the gene pool. Husband is waiting for a payment from one of the companies he's sold, who are a week late

before I can get it.... so just a waiting game right now.

I'll post pics of him once I get him out into his outdoor run. I've been working on it for 2 days now. He's getting a little pissy...lol... grabbing my glove when I go in a visit him and the Delaware hen's he's with. Usually he likes being held and pet....

Thanks Red!!! LOL... I've been looking for a boy so if she is a he...great!!! He'll go with my 2 young, grown Del hens and 4 new pullets.

I have 17 guineas and boy are they loud!!!! This area used to have a big problem with coyotes and snakes.... but not now since the guineas started living here!! They also eat ticks, which was also a problem... no ticks last year, PLUS they are garden gentle. They don't scratch like chickens, who annually rip up my garden and flower beds when not contained. They hunt and peck. The peafowl have a hand in scaring the predators too...lol. They love to go visiting the few neighbors out here on this dirt lane and are quite the show pieces. Most people have only seen peafowl in zoos...hahaha!!!

Wow. So guineas eat the ticks, huh? I will have to keep that in mind. Ticks are always one of my big concerns when I'm out in the mountains. If I end up moving to Delta or somewhere else still fairly rural when all of this nightmare stuff with my BF is over, I am going to see if I can talk him into getting some guineas. Have you had yours since they were keets, or have you always had them as adults? Are they hatchery stock? Breeder stock? I am loving those white ones and the lighter ones I can see in the picture (lavender?) I've only ever seen the darker-colored guineas.

I have heard that peafowl like to get up on peoples' cars and make a mess, but honestly, I wouldn't mind them in my yard. The noise would take some getting used to, but I'd love seeing that splash of color. They seem gentle, too. Whenever I have been to the zoo, their peafowl are always laid back, if aloof from the people. I can even get them to talk to me, hehe. I had a great grandfather that had a farm, and he kept guineas and peafowl. I guess he would go to the grocery store and get all of the old produce that they'd throw out, then feed it to his peafowl. Sounds like a job, for sure! But they are such beautiful birds.

If I can't ever get guineas or peafowl, my consolation prize to myself will be geese

My roosters are great when it comes to keeping an eye on other critters in the area, but I have always wanted some other kind of watch dog fowl. And until then, I just tease my BF that I need ducks. Or an emu, hahaha.

Hi everyone! New to the thread. I hatched out 1 olive eggers (Wheaten Ameracauna x BCFM) for the Easter Hatch (3 Weeks Old); Thanks Bluejems! I am trying to determine sex. It is now feathering in quite nicely with nearly all black feathers with brown lacing... Any idea if they are hens or roos? It has a single comb, but it is very small still... I'll try to post pics later, but from this description, does anyone have any idea?

Here is a picture of the mystery sex chicken! It is a little bit larger than the rest at this age, and seems to stand a little more upright as well compared to the others. In the pictures, it is a little bit difficult to see the brown, but in all reality, it is pretty blended in. From far away it just looks black. (Sorry for the poor pictures.)

Finally!

My Welsummer too her sweet time. I guess, 6 months isn't too long. She was 6
months on the 18th. I was hoping she would lay eggs with the big spots, and not the
peppered spots..big spots they are !

I've decided to scrap the two eggs I have. When I get back from my trip, I'll check my new eggs to see if they're fertile, and will continue to do so until I get results. Then I'll start working with them. My girls are only a year old, so I'll give them time. They're so good for me, so they're worth it. <3 After this I'll be selling another of my girls. owo Got an offer from another team member on Kalahari. It's looking like Sahara and Mozart will also end up being sold.

Been looking up alot on chicken genetics lately... Still excited for my crosses.

Excited and nervous about my competition coming up...

Hey. Does anyone have funny chick stories? :3 My Delaware, 4 week old Julia, likes to sit on my chest and watch me play my DS. Seriously. xD It's so cute and funny at the same time lol My babies are growing fast. <3
