I am so happy you got those babies. Well, a rooster isn't a baby. But glad you have them. I feel better now. If you don't want to worry about coming down for this other one. I could be fine with that.![]()
If you still want the tiny thing, it's still here. Man, I wonder if that rooster is as friendly to people, you will have to let us know. That is just too precious..you got a great shot!
My neighbor calls on everyone, there is always a cop that is on the street sometime during the week for something or other. He knows better then to call the cops on us, he did it once when we first moved in to the house, reason...Sprinklers was watering his fence, which is a shared fence, and it was hitting the fence on our side of the fence, my husband really let him have it for that. Made him feel like an idiot in front of the cop. He has called on my dogs a few times for barking, and I was out in the yard and they were barking at me. I do dog agility, and I was outside practicing in the middle of the day, and my dogs just bark their heads off when we are playing. Funny thing is I know all of animal control, because I do rescue, and they have to respond. But he calls animal control on everyone's dogs that bark, and even if a cat walks in his yard. I know he has called a few times on our other neighbor who has chickens, he said they were digging out his bushes through the fence or something like that, and so I know they put up chicken wire along the wooden fence. He has nothing better to do I guess, very old grumpy old man.Silly, if your neighbor is calling animal control that often, I'm surprised that the city isn't irritated with him by now. There's probably not much they could do, anyway, but if it were for ridiculous reasons, I would hope that at some point they'd tell him to knock it off or something. I'm sorry you have a grouch for a neighbor, though. There are a couple of us on here that have had neighbor problems, as well. It's unfortunate that some people just feel the need to cause problems.
Evey, I'm sorry you've had such a rotten time trying to establish a flockI can honestly relate. I lost so many birds last year to dogs, raccoons, natural death, and other ways that I still haven't figured out. I lost count of how many chickens and chicks I lost, but I lost at least three turkey poults, all to dogs. I've also dealt with some losses this year, and it can be quite discouraging. Hang in there, work on catching those predators, and keep refortifying the coop. That's all I can say. I hate raccoons like no other predator. They're greedy and wasteful, and they carry so many diseases. Foxes can be very crafty, too, and they stash their kills. Thankfully, I haven't run into those yet. Don't think we've had much skunk activity here, either, but I believe they dig.![]()
(side note - this editor keeps underlining "raccoon" in red, no matter how I spell it. How stupid)
Sundance, thank you - After my week's worth of lock down, I will let you know if I can come get some denegard. I really, really don't want this spreading, whatever it is. And Lacey is starting to fit in. She will come around the rest of the flock now when they eat. I do have a couple of girls that think they need to chase her off, so they may get put in timeout for a bit, but my head hen has decided that she's okay. I knew I should have gotten two girls from you. Ah well, I will continue to work with them.
My broody seems to be doing better today, but she's still not 100%. I think I am going to give the garage a good, thorough deep clean tomorrow after work to make sure that everything is dry, clean, and comfy. The water containers I keep in there keep getting tipped over, so I'm sure that doesn't help. And I took my two hatchery chicks outside for the first time today. They enjoyed it![]()
I had one kill one of my Silkies when it was young. I have a large flock of wild doves every summer. Last year i counted at least 20 doves on the tele wire above the coop. The falcons move in and chase the doves all around the neighbor hood and this draws the attention of larger birds like hawks. I lost our buff Silkie roo last year to a small hawk. Luckly we have a pair of crows that have made our neighbor hood their home in the spring, but once their chicks have left they nest the move on and the stupid birds of prey move in. I have 2 telephone polls in the back yard and was thinking of buying a couple of those fake owls and paying a city worker to put them on top of the poles. I dont know if this works but its worth a chance.Gary, you have Falcon problems? What do they do? I thought they were too small? I had one in my small run a while back. Glad my rsl made a lot of noise at it. She was standing there making a real racket..my DH asks, why is Reba standing there yelling at the end run like that? I run>>to the door. There is a Falcon in the run. It's going balistic trying to get out, and gets out once I get in. I didn't think they were big enough to cause problems with chickens..well, these were my small pullets. I thought mice? But it was day time, and I don't see the mice in the day..maybe the Falcon saw one in there.
I got a black baby from a blue egg, that is supposed to have splash in them. I know, it can happen when you are trying to get splash, there are two splash hatching, I can tell.) Now, on those Lavender Orpingtons. One so far is the light in color, but, it has puffy cheeks..not real puffy, but I see puff. What? lol..I am calling my friend tomorrow. And, two of the others are the dark blue, not a light lavender. Wonder what she thought she was getting. She was so sure they were lavender Orpingtons. They are pretty though. Will be nice looking chickens.
