I'm on the east side too, just south of the U of U and I've been amazed by the number of hawks I've seen circling low over the neighborhood---I guess keeping chickens has given me a predator radar because I never used to notice them. Some of them are pretty big---more the size of small eagles---but I don't know if they would go after a full sized chicken----mine are bantams so I worry.

Hi Sroll1su, As you know I'm in East Millcreek and had a Hawk get one of my chickens last year.

The Hawk (s) stalked us all summer and we had several other close calls. The Hawks were very brazen ... landing just a very few feet away from me and swooping in quite a few times even with me standing there.... I have also had raccoons checking things out.
but it also might be that the cemetery is so close.

I'd say raccoons, skunks, cats, dogs, and rats. For raccoons, their populations increase when they are in urban areas.
Sounds like you have it covered.

i was wondering about the coons and opossums. i haven't seen any sign of them around my place at all. i was starting to wonder if i'm just not seeing what's there. back home in louisiana they are everywhere and you can't miss them.

i'm also hoping that due to the large cherry tree above the coop, the hawks won't see the chickens. i'm trying to convince my wife to let the buff orpington go to someone with a covered run for that reason. she'll really stick out.

i was thinking that the cemetery might be the reason as well. i'm guessing that hawk lives there and doesn't have to go too far to hunt.

i can't remember, which hen did the hawk get?

btw, the speckled sussex is now our most adventurous bird.

I'm smack in the center of Bountiful and we've had racoons at our house, goshawks, red-tails, and, of course, the usual neighborhood dogs. In fact, I had my neighbor's little yappy mutt chasing my 4 year old son and one of our cats around my yard 2 days ago while my neighbors tried to catch him for about 20 minutes. Talk about wanting to punt! Fortunately, I have a tall fence around the area where my chickens are, so the dog couldn't get in there.

He/She got Lily, one of my black Australorps. The neighbors 2 rabbits went missing, we think the hawk also dined on those. And as far as the raccoons, my poor neighbors kept stocking their Koi pond with Koi and the raccoons kept stealing them

I'm so glad that Sussex is doing well

Don't get rid of your Buff. They're always the sweetest birds out of any of our flocks. This time around we are limited to 8 birds and one of them HAD to be a Buff.

I'm in Brigham City. The Planning planning commission worked an ordinance and submitted it to the city council. The BC Police are against it but the mayor said they would pass it when the concerns of the police were resolved. I have a blog for people interested in what is happening up north here. I have a post with a few links to ordinances of other cities/towns in Utah. Check it out at http://BrighamCityChickens.blogspot.com

Its nice to see so many communities officially incorporating them into their pet ordinances.
