Utah!

Yes, @Red, Cynthia is veeeery busy on the Easter thread! Come join in the fun! I can't believe how fast it's moving, and we will have three weeks! The fun part is knowing I'll always see that little red dot when I login. Haha.
Today I picked up a drop spindle. Does anyone know where I can get some raw fiber to spin?

Have you any friends who keep sheep? Or perhaps a husky? My brother's husky is long-haired and sheds like crazy, and it's super warm stuff.

RJ, Henny Penny is very spoiled and very cute.

Well, I chickened out. I'm not putting my second batch of eggs in the incubator. I'm too worried that the heightened humidity during lockdown of the first batch would hurt te embryos in the second batch. Hopefully my girls keep laying well after this batch hatches.

Well I will just have to make it raccoon proof. What size of hole can a raccoon fit through I wonder? There is cement in three sides too in the fence.
chicken wire wont hold them, they rip right through it so go with hardware cloth with screws or long staples. they will also reach through fencing and such and grab a bird and they will kill for the fun of it.

hey red ever think about keeping a silkie or two to hatch out eggs since they go broody so much? would be easy on your part too. and i bet you could find lots of people willing to buy any extra chicks you have

I would save the eggs now, if you are on day 8, that is only 13 days away :D You will have a ton to set for the next batch lol!!! :D

RJ I hope you know how much we appreciate your stories and pictures. It is so fun to see the love of chickens on full display, and you articulate so well how much you adore them. Love it. I always look forward to your posts :D

On that note..I wish everyone in the universe could understand this phenomenon we call chicken love, and sometimes feel like I am on a mission. "Helping every chicken find its Soul-Owner". I wish everyone could feel and understand the joy that we, here, have found in them! Corny I know, but it makes me so happy to see others find their soul-chickens. LOL!

Birdman, that is an idea I may just consider, as my broody girl disappeared last year. Thanks.

I wish to amend my earlier statement. I will indeed be trying the ten eggs on the table. I just candled the 13 in the bator, and of the whopping nine that were developing, nine are now dead. :(

Whaaaa! That is so sad! What do you think happened?

I don't know. The temps were steady, humidity steady, power was on, no one was in there bothering them. It looks like they all just quit on Sunday or so. I am wondering if one of the rags I'm using for humidity had something yucky on it, but I tried to use clean cloths. That's the only thing I can really figure. But why would they be fine and healthy for a week, then all just die on the same day? A couple of them were a day or two behind the others in development, even.

Any chance the thermometer is off and the temp was a tad low? How frustrating Red, I hope the next batch goes ok! :hugs

Well… I do not know how to say this, but I seem to have a new girl friend. Her name is Henny Penny and she seems to like me best. Most times when I go out to the coop to check on the birds, prior to letting them out for the day, she will jump up on my lap and we are able to share a few minutes together. I don't know if chickens can purr, but somehow she seems to vibrate her gentle persona into my hands and chest. Of all the birds I am privileged to mingle with on a daily basis, Henny Penny is my best girl, and I suppose I do spoil her some. On Wednesdays I take her in for a weekly pedicure. Should you look at the feet of said bird, shown below, you will see she has selected a lovely shade of pink, to complement her comb and waddles. I am still searching for a bag online to match this outfit, but have not, at this point, found one that she favors.

Henny Penny is a BBR Banty hen and her best friend is Silver Penney, a nice Silver Duckwing hen of the same age. Beautiful creatures, these little hens. Looking forward to adding some new OEG birds a little bit down the road this spring. I do so hope the nice folks here in the Utah thread enjoy their birds as much as do I.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ
Mr RJ, I truly adore this pic, and love it when chickens love us this much :D Growing up, I had a duck that was always wanting to be with me. I loved it! still looking for that experience again. I have a little Dutch bantam that I was really hoping would become my little pocket chicken (her name is Pockets) but I think she had a bit of a traumatizing time with previous chickens in her other family that I got her from, and she never really took to me that well. If they haven't started laying for you, you will be surprised at how large their eggs really are compared to their body size! (but now thinking back, I saw (I think it was yours) the pic of the xlarge, medium, small egg. ) I don't get on the BYC forums much anymore, but was giggling when I saw your Henny Penny! :D Thanks again!
