no baby yet, we'll find out on the 10th if we're having a 4th boy, or a little girl I will for sure post some pics

oh, and I haven't said anything on here yet this is the first time. heck, I've haven't told many of my friends lol

Yes, I saw that it wasn't until later..but like I said, it will go by faster for us..oooh, especially since it's due during the hot part of the summer. :/ I had two in Aug..last one in Sept. My first two ..first, was in June..nice time, and the second one in April, also a nice time.

Red, et al, Yes of course I will share photographs, should she succeed in her chosen task. Looks like hard work to me… On another note, I am not sure if I have shared this photo with the kind folks here, or not. So please excuse me should it be a double post of a sort.


Happy Chickens Lay Happy Eggs…



The first clue was the white eggs, from my Barred Rock hens? Then upon closer inspection, we noticed the implied eggs had faces. Happy ones at that! It would seem that our little neighbor girl, whom has grown up and has a cute baby boy now, decided to… well play some type of 'Tom Foolery' upon us. She has always had a wonderful sense of humor and has been fun to watch grow up. But this little prank might have went a little too far. This was at the time of first lay for our flock, and I fear that she may have traumatized said fowl, for they did not lay for several days hence.

Not to let a 'tit' go without a 'tat'… we responded by sending over a couple of real brown Barred Rock eggs, a few weeks later, made of wood mixed into a carton of 'real' eggs. For some reason when they tried to crack them, they did not. Yes, we got them good, they knocked them on the rim of the bowl, on the sink, on the counter top… before they stumbled into the fact they had been taken in by fake brown eggs. Kristen, the egg face painter, then called in her dad, to help with the 'hard egg' and watched him go through the above sequence of trying to crack that egg. Well they enjoyed the exersise so much, they set up the mom for the next day. Never have gotten those two eggs back… I suppose they enjoy them. It defines, I would suppose, the term 'a tough egg to crack.'

Anyway I am off to work and I have a photograph of Oprah and a RIR to share as a parting shot.

New here! Just wanted to pop in and introduce myself. I just picked up my first chicks yesterday and I'm so excited to raise them! I've wanted backyard chicks for years, but my DH has always said 'No way!'. Well, last month we had a little baby girl, who died shortly after birth due to a terminal disorder called Potter's Syndrome (no kidneys). This occurred about 18 months after we had a son die from the same thing. Needless to say, my nurturing instinct has been on MAJOR overdrive for almost 2 years now, with no baby to nurture! Having more babies is off the table, as the risk is too great to lose another. We couldn't get another dog, as we learned the hard way that our current dog (who is getting on in years, has diabetes, and it mostly blind and we think partly deaf too) needs to be an only dog. But I convinced my DH is give me a try with chickens!

We picked up our 4 girls (i hope they're girls) yesterday and they're chirping away in the little brooder box I fashioned for them. We have a Black Sexlink (my DS has named 'Blackie" already), a Buff Orpington (because my DD desperately wanted a yellow chick--She named her Mely), a Barred Rock, and a Silverlaced Wyandotte. I'm hoping to get an Easter Egger too, but that might be a next year thing. I think the most chickens I can have for my property size is 6. Our family is down in the heart of Utah County.

Anyway, that's me in a nutshell, excited to meet people and pick your brains as we're learning!

Welcome! Oh my goodness, you have been through a lot. Although I cannot relate directly, I have a sister that lost three children to Encephalitis..the drs. never could figure out why these children were getting this. She lost a daughter in a Feb. at the age of 19 months. Yrs. later, can't remember exactly, but she lost a 4 yr. old son in the same month of Feb. Then, that very same yr. she lost another daughter just before Christmas at the age of 7. She has living, three sons..is now a grandmother, and has had a granddaughter named after one of the girls she lost. She says it's still hard. I can only imagine. I watched what she went through, soo sad. I have a son with Spina Bifida that I still worry about. His health is not good, he always has something going on, but he is living on his own, which worried me even more, but he is determined to be independent. A good thing I suppose. We have had to hurry over a few times to help, call an ambulance, because we can't lift him. Always something going on. He has had to call an ambulance a few times himself on his own. He pretty much knows when he needs to get to the ER now. No waiting on mom to come and say, you need to go. The most recent being, he broke his leg, the bone just above the foot. He should be getting that cast off anytime now. At least he didn't spend weeks in the hospital this past winter, like he's had to the last couple of yrs. Knocking on wood!
To fun news, I also just got a few chicks from Cal Ranch. They are doing really well. If they keep this up, then in a week, they will go out to the chick nursery. I got myself some nice egg layers..2 RIR's, 2 Leghorn's, and 2 Red Sex Links I will probably sell one of each when they get older. I like to watch personalities. So before they lay. I took photos of a couple of my silkies today. Soo funny, the one has .. had, so much feathering around the face/eyes, that I clipped them for her. She kept hitting her head on the low perch I have out there for them. Poor baby..kept walking around with little eye sight. It was pretty, but I felt bad, so clipped a bit. Will post photos I took earlier in a bit. Another silkie, looking funny right now. Not as much feathering, but I love her, had to feed her for about a week to get her going, now she's a goer! Good luck with your new babies!

Where's the eyes? lol...


The feet on all of these that I hatched from the gal that I bought sizzle eggs from .. have
such feathered legs and feet!

Here is my funny little brown one. I love her! She is just now getting more feathering on
the top of her head..a lot of pin feathers in there. Not so much muff going on, but I love
the silkie eyes.




Go ahead and chuckle, I do, every morning I go out and she
comes running to me inside the run. She's soo much smaller
than the others.

Awww They are both so pretty. I really like the brown partridge. Thats the original look/color of partridge I had been looking forever for lol. I like the ones with the bright contrast between the chest & head. I love the social babies. My baby paints out there do the same thing

WELCOME littlerockflowr....I am so glad you have your new chickens, and so sorry to hear of the loss you have had to go through! Sounds like your spirits are amazingly good, and you are trying to stay positive, kudos to you for that. You are an inspiration already, I wish you all the best going forward and hope you find lots of joy in poultry keeping! Glad you joined this thread, lots of great folks on here.

Cynthia--those guys are getting so dang cute! Yes, a smile for my Friday looking at those sweet little faces.

I need another still air bator, just checking first on here to see if anyone is selling a used one?? If not, off the CAL I go. No more stacking eggs in bators. As far as you know anyway

I sold a great many of my adult hens last week, And today I have gotten a grand total of 4 eggs. Sheesh. Trying just to keep the breeds I am working with, but they just happen to be breeds that don't lay so great.
