I'm finally heading! lol..

Does anyone have any seramas I have a flock of reds and I want to add a couple more if someone wants to trade some of my eggs or chicks for one of their chicks, eggs, or pullets would be awesome

Last night my cat snuck out of the house while we were brining our girls in for the night and was attacked by another animal. :( I had to make a run to the store to get first aid supplies which got me thinking, what do you keep on hand as first aid supplies for your birds?

Neosporin is a biggy for me. Mostly for my chicks though when hatching. I use a lice spray that you get at the pet spray for mites/lice, so that is there..also seven dust..I will use that for the whole body if they look to be>>itching and not just preening. I put the seven dust in the nest boxes every now and again after cleaning them. Not ever time.
I also have a kit of my own that I made for bumble foot. I've had to deal with that a few times. Also a time for Neo..since I've dealt with it a few times, I bought the special tools that makes it easier to punch through the sore, then to clean it out.
I know some keep other meds on hand, but I keep Denagard on hand, I use it twice a yr. to prevent upper R. and Valbazen for worms.

I would go by comb and waddle color. Light pink at that age is usually hen, and a darker color is usually boy By my experience. I don't think I would judge just by tail feathers on an EE.

I agree, don't go just by feathers. Combs and waddles can lie, too. I had an EE once that I thought was a girl until he was half grown. His pointy feathers didn't surface for a long time and his comb was small and pale. Then I had another one that has pointy tail feathers and a pink comb at an early age, but she was a she.

Question for you guys that use broodies....If you use a broody to hatch chicks in the coop, and can put food and water in the coop.....what about the ladder...do the chicks try to go out the door and fall out or go down the ladder and can't get back in the coop? Or does mom keep them in the coop ok? Mine is about a two foot drop from the doorway to the ground. Wondering if you have to move the mom to ground level or if it can be done in the coop.

I keep mine on the ground. I've had a couple of broodies that were just too dumb to go out and get chicks that fell out, even with a ramp right there.

What we have been doing with our broody is that we block the opening with a terrarium. We only move it if we are watching her with the chicks. She seems to have it under control. We have also put in a ramp for the chicks to get back in if they got out somehow. They don't use it. The opening to get back into the actual coop is about 1 and a half feet off the ground. Somehow those little chicks jump up there. It is about 5 times there height! I had no idea they could jump so high!

I'm working on my coop today. I got it used and it was pretty rough. I put a couple layers of Kilz primer on the outside and then painted it with an exterior paint. I also put a couple layers of Kilz on the floor and nesting boxes to give it a smoother surface in hopes of making it easier to clean. It soaked in though and still feels pretty rough. Think this will be ok? Could I put a layer of exterior paint on the floor too to make it a little smoother? I've also been wondering about all the gaps along the top which you can see from my inside pics. I keep seeing posts about not wanting it to be drafty. Do I need to find a way to block these? If so, any suggestions? My husband and I aren't very handy but are trying to learn. We live close to Logan Canyon so the canyon winds really pick up at night around here. Also, I don't really care for the previous owners roost placement. What would you recommend to get the most out of the space I have?

I just candled my eggs. Today is day twelve, and I still have 17 going strong! I can't believe it! I pulled out the four clears and two early quitters. Could be one more quitter, but I'm leaving it in for now. I may have babies at the end of the week!!!!
