I don't actually drink the wine, because I'm Mormon. ;) The vinegar is amazing, though. ... Don't worry. My bishop knows my habits. -.- ha ha ha ha

So I candled the egg mama kicked out. It was a quitter at about day 15. Bummer! Was one of my leghorn crosses too. But, that mama knew her business, and saved the babies that were viable. Now I just need the will power to leave her alone.

And yes, fermentation does kind of hang in the air in a way. It is the offgassing from the beneficial microbes. I started making wine, so I could make my own vinegars, and wine is a super strong ferment smell! Microspic life is amazing.
I have made wine and I love it, but there is far less surface layer to put off aroma so I never noticed it as a bad smell. At least not for long.

Sidewing, I don't find the smell unpleasant at all. It is a sweet, maybe cheesy sort of smell -- far different from the putrid rot smell. I use unsecured lids to keep my curious sons out of it, though. Ha ha

It's interesting..sounds like out smell buds are all different like our taste buds! To each his own right? I think all of the food I do for the chickens, like fodder, smells funny. Or icky. But, I like the taste of the greens on the fodder. Tastes just like sweet peas to me. Weird ey?

If you get extra just send it to Isadora and I. :D My mom used to make homemade wine from the pie cherries on her cherry tree. That stuff was so good! Homemade vinegar would be really cool. And Bishop approved, it is a great idea!

Sidewing, try 1 Tablespoon of ACV at a time in your system, and see if it helps.Let it sprout first, then try it after the seeds have sprouted. I just add mine to the jug of water that I water/rinse with. It does not have to have the Raw Mother, because you are using it more as a disinfectant than a good bacteria additive, heck I bet even Distilled White Vinegar would work with this now that I am thinking of it...might have to try that. Seems like that would maybe work even better?
