Utah!

Good luck, sun! What are you showing her in? My daughter showed a hearing in the lunge line competition at the Cache Valley fair and we're working on gentling 2 foals right now. Love being back around horses! :)

Projects started… and sort of left. Seems like I've a plethora of projects that my enthusiasm got going, and then, well perhaps you know the problem yourself. To get to the point, I started a screen door for my Bantum coop last fall. I put it up yesterday, took a year or so. I am on a project to finish some projects, because, well I want to start some new ones. I've attached a shot of the door in the front of my coop, it is a slider and was a fun build and concept, despite the delay in hanging said door.

That would be the Mrs., DW aka Karole speaking fowl to the hens, and also playing Vanna White, showing what is behind door number two. Anyone else have a few half finished projects kicking around the place? Here is a call to all procrastinators to take a stab at those unfinished projects before the nice days of summer are gone.

Best to all and you birds,

RJ

Edit: I told the DW that she was the hottest chick on the place, but it did not seem to improve my position.

Thank you iPick, it seemed to take a long time to get to where it is now, but the DW and I do enjoy it now the work part is mostly in the 'finish up" stages. But on the other hand, I am not sure that coops are ever completed. I always seem to find some new thing to try and or build for by birds. I do like my chickens, Bantum & Large Fowl. The DW took a couple of pictures of my recent clean out, from inside that I would like to share.

This is clean and dry, I did a hose out and scrub down.

Here we are good to go with fresh shavings. I keep pellets, water, grit & oyster shell inside for them year round, the nest boxes are behind the DW in this view. I have yet to finish the vaulted ceiling and a few others 'things.' I may decide to do nothing in my spare time, but I 'do' like that I always have something to do. Chickens are a wonderful hobby and lifestyle choice.

Looks to be a nice day, at least in the northern part of the state, best to all and your birds,

RJ

That place looks amazing RJ. There is always something I'm wanting to add or modify for sure. I need to make an outdoor brooder before my wife loses patience with my hatching.

This is Lacy my Appaloosa. Don't mind eds finger on top of photo LOL
She's a pretty girl! Appy's are DH's favorite. I have to show him, now :) RJ, I am loving your coop and your lovely assistant. I wish my in-progress shots looked that good, haha. Our in-progress coop has been a pile of boards for a while, now. I'm accepting your challenge and asking DH about it today!

So, I strongly believe in universal balance. Ying and yang, good and evil, etc... Well, last night I had a raccoon eat one of my Speckled Sussex. :(
To spare the details, let's just say the hen was awfully hollow.

So, does anyone have a live trap that I can borrow for a week or so!? Ugh.

Ace… sorry for the horrible loss. I lost one of these same birds this summer, in much the same way. They (Speckled Sussex) must taste very good… what a raccoon can do to a bird is beyond description, so it is good you did not share that information here with us. My anger was only topped by my disgust for these night visitors. My attack was by a family group, I had defended against 'A' raccoon, but did not take into account that they would work together as a team. Learning this (the hard way) opened my eyes to a whole 'new' level of danger we live with every night. A most discouraging event and a blow to one of your favorite projects. It would seem to be a double whammy in your case.

A bird keeper must be steeled, a trait that is earned against ones will… but earned over time nonetheless. With chicken projects having a six month to a year lead-time investment, the sting this leaves one with just plain sucks. I have a new trap that has proven to be somewhat effective, it has confirmed 'captures'. I will loan you the use of said live trap, as long as nothing live leaves it. We must band together and reduce the numbers of these vermin and the danger they place on bird lovers everywhere in the state. Cache Valley certainly has a surplus of these raiders of the night. The ones around here are brazen, I am/was stunned to see them act in the manner they did around my place.

Of course vengeance will not change what is done, but it does honor the victims and benefits the survivors. Plus it steels the bird keeper, this hobby has a dark side or under belly of which we, for the most part, do not speak of. Protection of ones flock is of paramount importance, please look over your system and make repairs or improvements, the danger is real and is extremely resourceful. BYC'ers here need to be aware of this danger, and the damage done.

PM me if you would like to employ my trap, I'll set it out on the front side walk for you to pick up as you wish and provide an address as well.
