Good looking rooster! Is this one of her Olive Eggers? I just hatched out one of her batches, and it looks like I have a black frizzled.

Ipicks roo is a frizzled Silkie, Ace's frizzled black chick is a LF OE from my Frizzled EE hen FRIZZ--- (she was from Sundance's Frizzled EE Roo HERCULES for certain and Sundance's Hen DARKNESS the Araucana we think) and from my FBlueCM Roo TEX. It's getting hard to keep track of the family trees but I think I've got that right LOL

Ace, so glad one of yours is frizzling! Those get really big. At least all that ones I have hatched and grownout (4) have gotten very plump and nice. If I recall correctly Hercules was pretty massive.

On the roost? I know our girls refused to roost, they chicken piled on the floor or in nest boxes until we started placing them on the roost nightly. My chicken with really feathery feet (Sultan) still won't roost. I think the feathers make it hard for her to get up there.

They go up into the roosting area, knock down the roosting poles, and then pile. They are currently piling in their nest boxes (I had them blocked off until they knocked down the door.
These chickens...
I guess at least they go in the roost at night. They just need to get on the poles instead of trying to huddle under them.

On a side note, RJ, your trap works perfectly! In fact, Katy Perry was concerned that I was doing it wrong since we haven't caught the rascal yet. Well, she learned first hand that the trap is indeed trapping.

Ace… well it is a start. I takes patience and a steady will to catch the vermin of the wild. He/she will be making the rounds once again and if you persist, ye shall be thus rewarded. It is a lot of work being a responsible bird keeper.

Ace, I have heard that piling something around the sides of the cage, such as cinder blocks, helps. The critter can't immediately see it and isn't as suspicious. Hope this helps.

Sad. Day 13 and none of my shipped Legbar eggs had a hint of veining. I think they had a rough shipment. Through the shells they looked pretty scrambled despite a great packing job.

Has anyone had any issues with hawks? We had one hanging around this morning. My big girls were all under the coop yelling at it. Can they take off with a full size chicken?

They can! I had one carried off last year. It was HUGE bird that took of with one of my BR 4 month old pullets, full size.

I also had a magpie swoop down and eat the eyeballs out of one of my Polish chicks...she was probably about 10 weeks old. It was super super super nasty, I've covered the little gated pen I use for growouts ever since because it was so traumatizing!

Wow, Lisa! That is traumatizing! I have all my birds out freelancing in the yard today. I think I'll send my dog out there to watch over them. Maybe that'll keep the bird away. Since we're in a pretty contested area with good tree coverage, we don't see many hawks but I always have magpies around.

Oh heck ya I am sure a dog would help a ton. My dog---no. Your dog....yes ! Haha!
Magpies are the devil, I really dislike them. We culled that chick, it was alive but not in a way that could have survived. So gross I doubt they would go after a full size bird, but I don't trust them. The hawk we had out here was gigantic, it would sit on the top of our tall poplar trees and just watch my birds. We have lots of birds out this way toward the marshlands...have not seen a hawk for the last month or two though I hope it stays that way. Hope yours goes away too!
