Utah!

Bitsy your pullet, despite being in a darn scary outfit, seems to hold great promise for the future.

I am up to two grand-pullets now as well. I tend to like them more than I let on. And I bumped into this photograph overlaid with text, but thought it perhaps apporiate for the members of the fairer sex. I think mom's do have the harder job, and having said that, I appreciate all their efforts, including picking up the eggs.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

well, I just got an email stating that this picture made it into the top 30 images for the BYC calendar! crossing my fingers! :D
Congrats Bitsy! It is a splendid shot :) And I love the smile on your little one. So cute! LadyIsadora, I used to have a RIR hen that would assist me in gardening like your ducks do. She was such a fun shadow to have. I wish the ducks we have were half as social as yours! I can't even get within twenty feet of them if I have a snail for a treat. I have to stop and toss it or they'll run :( I do love hearing them chatter when I'm outside, and I love how they stomp in puddles, too.

I have a confession to make:

I love the IDEA of having chickens.
but
Chickens scare me a bit. I dont know if I could deal with one following me around the garden. When I was quite young my wicked step-father kept some chickens. Banshees??? anyway, they were kept in their cages and were not friendly at all and would just scream at me when I walked by and try to peck my fingers if I tried to give them goodies. It was actually agai nst the rules for me to go near them. Later after I married my first, they had chickens that were mostly naked, sharp beaked Ill tempered little things we put on a but to freezer camp shortly thereafter. So I have not known many chickens personally and most of them I have known were poor neglected under nurtured little things. And they were not nice. And their beaks are sharp. yep a little bit...cautious.
It's all your stories on here that make me want to give it a go with them and try to forgive the rotten caretakers of the chickens I have known. Like every other thing you get what you give.

I am pretty lucky with my ducks. They do eat bugs right out of my hand before running off. They know the word "bugs" and will most-times come from across the yard for them. Some ducks are more cautious now than they used to be. The neighbour girl is about 9. when it rains she collects a big butter tub of snails and comes over to feed the ducks. They come right up to her for the yummy treats too.

you could always go visit someone's tame chickens :) or get you some chicks of a breed that are known to be friendly, like a buff orpington, barred rock, among many others... I can't remember all of them right now lol (newborn mommy brain)

Hmmm, I can see why you're hesitant about them. Those chickens do NOT sound happy! Not all are like that, though. I have had the privilege of visiting several members on here, and I can tell you that some of the girls people keep are especially sweet and friendly. I have a hen that used to be my lap chicken, but I haven't been able to spend as much time with my flock and they've gotten wild. Still no pecking or attacks, though. They're just happy little butterballs that hang out under the hay trailer and will come out to greet you, but don't want to be touched. The only time I've been growled at was when someone was sitting on eggs. I had a screamer broody, but she disappeared last year. Other than that, they'll talk to me and tell me if I'm the least bit late for dinner, lol!

Your chickens on here are all so loved & cared for ;-)
and beautiful.
And that baby is pretty great too! I just want to hold her and rock her and sing her stories.......Im going to go sing to my ducks now.
