Still waiting on my NYD chicks to hatch. Come on guys! Most are from Lisa - silkie/SG and 3 F1 OEs - and then a few silkies from a friend on the FB page.

Also broke down and bought some fertile eggs from Trader Joes to try to hatch for fun.

My Welsummer from Grey Bird finally started laying last week! Gorgeous eggs of course. Love them!

I am not sure who or whom is giving me the cold shoulder, but it was minus 11 to 15 at my place overnight. First two weeks of January are usually the coldest so I suppose we are progressing toward spring at the preverbal glacial pace. New Years resolutions include the typical five with a few others tossed in to please my mom. I fear mom was not so much wanting me to improve, as to just meet the minimum requirements for social acceptable reasons. As I view my adult children this time of year, I can feel my mothers pain.

After a long talk with my physician, we have decided to discontinue treatment of my wart, with ACV with Mother for the new year. Last night was the last that I ingested a glug and placed a topical compress on said imperfection. It does not seem to work as I had once hoped. However my complexion is/has become a tad rosier. So not a total loss at any rate… I suppose I will keep the remains of said jug around, in case I contract a fungal infection on one or more of my toes. My kind thanks and regards to those of you who have followed this saga the past few months, via the PM feature of this site. I will have no more updates and etc. on this topic. But you may still contact me as you wish. Thanks again for the support and well wishes.

Looks to be a cold night again this evening, stay in and stay warm.

I cannot decide if I have a legitimate egg eater or not.....I have one hen that is still in a serious moult so it would not be uncommon for me to get soft shelled eggs from her since she is still laying 2-3 eggs a week. I find her sometimes still in the egg box with egg all over her tummy and the broken soft shelled egg under her and sometimes I just find the leavings of 1/2 of a thin shelled egg. But I have also found an egg from the same type chicken (I have 2 Production Reds) with just one peck in the typically strong egg but the egg is left in the box, as if someone tested it and found it hard enough to leave....(though now useless to everyone with a tiny hole in it). I get that she is going to eat the weak broken one as an opportunistic moment but I am not sure if it is a bigger problem than that. I have found a couple broken eggs here and there from the other chickens but they could easily have been broken by other means as they were the ones laid under the poop board when I was struggling with that issue. They are now all laying in one of the egg boxes after some modifications to the box and packing straw into the corners so forcefully that moving it out would be a lot of work.....I may have to do the same changes to the other egg box since now I regularly find 2 hens in the preferred egg box. Fine now but in the summer they will not appreciate the added warmth of a hen in the sweltering heat. Now to figure out if one of the Reds are actually becoming an avid egg eater....sigh.
This is all happening as I have a few semi broody hens lol. The Brahma laid an egg while the EE was sharing the egg box with her so the EE quickly tucked the egg under herself when the Brahma left and was not happy when I reached under her to get both hers and her flockmates eggs out. One or other of the Orps has spent a good portion of the day in the box with no egg under her till I shove her out. I am not totally against some barnyard mutts but I am very undecided on who would be able to protect the chicks well enough and dont really have the set up to let a hen brood them separately without a ton of ......less than pretty.... modifications. I have separated the coop before when the newbies and Reds needed to be segregated but it was a terrible configuration of pieced together welded wire and poultry netting walls that was a collosal bother.

Haven't been on as much. Invited a new gal I met at Cal Ranch the other day to join. She said she would, but haven't seen her yet. She would be a fun one too.

No fun either. Ugh! I hope it doesn't last long. Don't we always hope that it won't last long, but it seems that colds and flu bugs just hang on anymore, especially the ones with the cough involved..which I have.

You bet it has! It dropped below zero here the other night. I tossed a couple of chickens into the tack shed with a construction light because they were struggling with the temps. Lost another of our meat birds, but I think it's because they are nearing the end of their life expectancy. They're almost a year old, and they've had a good life. I also toted a couple of birds into the bathroom a few times for a spa day because their feet were getting frozen. My rooster loved it I spoiled him, though. He got to eat popcorn while he was in the house, haha.

I'm sorry you haven't been feeling good, either. I think there's a whole party bag of germs going around right now. It's sure not fun to be sick. Hope you feel better soon.

And, I think DH is sick. He asked me today about incubating eggs. I think I'd better take his temperature. So, anyone have any purebred layer/dual purpose eggs I could buy for hatching? lol!
