Utah!

Sorry for those of you who were hit by vandals and those who have flooding. I'm blessed to be up high so the water runs away from my house. And I will never understand the need to destroy someone else's property just for kicks. Not something I would have ever thought of doing as a youth.

I didn't get a lot of interest in putting together an order from Sandhill this spring so I'm trying a new route. Hubby and I are building an incubator that we are going to test with some of our hens fertile eggs. If it works well I was wondering if there is anyone in Northern Utah who has fertile Maran eggs for sale that I could hatch on my own. I'd really rather not have to have eggs shipped since that seems to really lower the hatch rate.

I generally have my webcam up during the day. It used to be on 24/7, but my laptop was giving me fits, so I started shutting it down at night. I was gone most of the day today, and forgot to get it up and going again this morning. It's up now though. I have someone helping me with Hulksmash, but honestly, I just don't think her prognosis is great. I've promised a couple people not to do anything just yet, but I'm not feeling at all optimistic about her prospects.

Thanks for the condolences on the vandals. I doubt I'll ever get a penny back that I lost in damages, but at least I know they were caught. FELONY charges. I hope it was worth it.

Skunknchatter, I know of at least two people who sell hatching eggs (well, one I KNOW sells hatching eggs, and another who sells chicks, so I imagine they sell eggs too). The one up in our neck of the woods is River Rock Family Farm: http://www.utahwarmblood.com/Egg_Sales.html I bought a day old BCM from her, and he was a stunning rooster. Really, all of their stock is gorgeous. They don't separate out into breeding pens in the winter, but as soon as they do, I plan to buy some BCM and some SLW hatching eggs from her. Possibly even some coronation sussex.

I contacted river rock family farm about which varieties of chicks they'll be selling this spring and I haven't heard back. I've emailed and called. How do you get ahold of them??

I've had better luck with email than calling.

I haven't heard from her for a month or two (of course, I haven't tried to contact her since Nov). She'd said that they have all of their chickens together this time of year, so if you want hatching eggs now, they're just "barnyard mixes". She said they start separating out into the breeding pens in February or so.

I'm guessing they're not too worried about returning calls and emails right now since they're not gearing up for chicks/eggs right now.

It always bothers me when people feel the need to mess up someone else's stuff. We've had a few times here where kids go around either vandalizing cars and stealing stuff, or else breaking into peoples' homes. It's enough to make you want to lock everything up! I dunno, maybe I'll get a pet skunk or something and train it to spray intruders. Creative punishment, right?

Lisa, you've sure had a fun run of luck lately, haven't you? I'm sorry

my dad had a neighbor as a kid who had a pet badger, he was a old single man and the badger was what kept him company. it would sit and snuggle up with the man being sweet as can be but if anything came into the yard that badger would act like a badger and attack.

Well it was pouring when we went to get my BLRW eggs. Rebecca is a sweetheart. She had the dates written on the eggs as to when they were gathered. Nice.
I've been so excited about my chicks, and new eggs, that I forgot to tell my happy news about myself. I've been given the go ahead to wean off of this neck collar! It hurts to turn my neck from left to right, but it is better than at first. Slowly but surely. They want another X-ray just before I go in next month, to see how I have done with it off. Sure hope it is fusing! They said the report from my last X-ray showed no movement of the plate, so that's why I can go without my collar now. I wore it today during the car ride this morning though! Only saw one car off the side, turned completely around against the cement barrier. People were driving way to fast..maybe my hubby and I are oldie fogies though.
Shinx and Lisa..still thinking of you and your babies..

I've emailed too. I understand that right now is not the time to be buying chicks, but it is the time that people are planning. I want to know what breeds they will have as chicks so I can decide if I want to go there or the hatchery/Cal Ranch/IFA route. I am a planner and I want to plan this now. Really not returning an email or a phone call is a real put off for me.

bird-man - That's cute! I love how animals bond with people like that. I wonder how he ever got his hands on a badger, or even what inspired him to have one? Our neighbor across the street had pet racoons when he was a kid, and I have a friend who had a pet skunk a while back.

Cynthia - Okay, I must have missed this. Why in the world are you in a neck brace?

Lisa - Hope your basement doesn't flood! I've even seen some mild flooding in fields a little north of here, so I'm really hoping you guys don't get slammed much more. I love snow and winter, but I don't like when it causes problems for people.

Yes, Cynthia, tell the story of the neck brace. I wasn't aware of this either.

Lisa, how is your chicken? How are you doing with all the snow/water?

Kimmy, I can definitely understand feeling put off by her not returning calls/emails. If I ever do happen to catch her (I'll probably contact her in a month or so), I'll pass along that you're wanting to talk to you.

I have very sad news. My dh was trying to do chick physical therapy for me this morning so I could sleep in. He found that her leg had stiffened up to where he couldn't get her leg to bend the way it was supposed to. She also couldn't stand up at all. As he watched, he also saw that the other chickens were really starting to peck at her and pick on her. He was carrying her around, and she actually seemed to be relieved that she was out of the tank and off her feet. He knew I'd been toying with the idea of euthanizing her, and after spending some time with her this morning, strongly felt this was the most humane thing for her. He woke me up and told me his thoughts, and we culled her together. I'm really sad, but I really do think it was the kindest thing for her.

::hugs:: If you both felt that, then you know you did the right thing. I'm so sorry, I know how very hard that was to do.
