Utah!

New baby is in the brooder and walking around! She seems to be a lot smaller than the others, but her feathers haven't fluffed up like the other chicks. Other than that, she seems to be perfectly healthy.

I do remember one of my eggs being significantly smaller than the others and wondered if it was a pullet egg. I'm wondering if it was this chick, and it hard a tough time hatching as a result. I think I took a picture of the eggs, I'll have to go find it and see if it was her.

You know, if that was the small egg like you say, then that would help explain why I have seen some people cautioning against trying to hatch midget eggs. I'll be interested to see what you find, Sphynx.

Oh, I also have some exciting news (at least, I'm excited) We found a home for Jerry, which means I get to order chicks! YAAAAY! I totally want a Welsummer and a Cochin

Gotta go to Cal Ranch soon and see if I can put in an order to come when they get their usual bunch of chicks. This will be the first time I've ordered!

Great choices, Red.

I'm pretty sure Zuli (late chick) was in the small egg. Here's a picture I took when I set them to incubate. She was labeled as "Beryl" (webcam viewers nixed that name LOL) and is on the left side. It doesn't seem as noticeable in the picture, but I remember one being noticeably smaller.

And can I just say how giddy with relief as I watch her scamper around the brooder with no problems at all?

I know! She looks so good! You did a great job. And then keeping her up on her belly after, Lisa is right, you have a lot of patience there. She will look a little less puffy for a while because she has sticky stuff still on her. But, it looks to me like she has more red than the others? Maybe it's just my eyes! I need my new glasses..now! lol..

Yes, she is definitely the darkest overall. I gave her a quick shower last night, but she's still not totally fluffed out. I resisting the urge to give her another.

I emailed those two pictures to the breeder today, and she seemed pretty tickled with how dark the head on the redhead was, and predicted excellent coloring on it when it's grown. I'm kind of thinking it may be a rooster. We'll have to see. I've decided that I'll keep one rooster from the BLRW- I'm toying with the idea of breeding them and selling the hatching eggs.

Hmm, if there are, they don't post often.

You are welcome to join us. I have to admit I don't spend much time in your neck of the woods. Are chicken laws lenient there?
