Utah!

Red--That is part of the fun---comparing chick pics to mama hen pics isn't it? AND waiting for that first egg :) She sure is cute.....and sounds like a good personality to boot. Oh yes the dear Cache Valley, snows here clear into April/May. Does not stick around long after end of Feb. Last three weeks we have had three snow storms, wake up to a few inches of white, but it usually melts throughout the daytime by this time of year. and leaves a.mushy.mess. I shoveled off the coop roof this morning because as the snow melts it drips straight down in front of their gate, underneath the letters, which is where we stand to get eggs, and we are sinking in it right there. We are going to put a rock or mulch border around the whole deal for next year, it is getting too muddy/messy and the grass is pretty trashed. On the West side there are marshes everywhere, cat tails growing....lots of mosquitos. Pretty----but wet. Last year we had water under our house all winter in the crawlspace, but last year was worse than usual. It is finally dried out, hoping it stays that way, it is way too much work to get the water out of there! And it makes me worry about the house settling. So far so good. :D :D :D

Cynthia, I went back through--did you post a pic of your Andalusian? Would love to her see her :) Glad to hear you are getting all your chicks sold. And you are getting more haha!

Never tried the golf ball trick. Sounds like a good idea! Maybe that would get my girls out of the one nest they all share, I have seen three piled in there at the same time. Chickens smart? Hmmm....

Golf balls, one of the best teachers for chickens. lol

We got dumped on with snow for about an hr. and a half here. Now it's off and on, light..but won't be surprised for another dump.

So, no doing anything outdoors today for sure with my chickens. Catching up on laundry, and also have made some blueberry muffins..can ya smell them? yummmm

Hi you guys! I'm wondering if anyone here knows the laws for having chickens in the city of Holladay? We might be moving there and I can't seem to find if it's legal or not.

WG, if you can't find anything on Holladay's site (if they have one) you might have to call in to the City Hall and talk to someone about it. I couldn't find anything on WVC's site, so I had to drive over there and chat with a couple of folks. Good luck!

Lisa, wow, good times? You weren't kidding when you said it gets marshy! The area out by my coop is muddy, though nowhere near as soggy as what you seem to have. My boyfriend wants to fill in some of it with gravel, which should help a lot in the wet weather, I think. My birds like it alright, but I don't think I've ever met a chicken that doesn't care for dirt

Glad to hear that your crawlspace hasn't flood yet, though!

Oop! Forgot to add - Lisa, YES! And I hadn't even thought about the whole first egg thing. Oh my goodness, this is going to be fun.

Hi guys, we decided to put a window in the side of the brooder. Gives a different perspective than the video camera....and as an unintended consequence, will possibly drive the cats bonkers! Before the kitties couldn't see the chicks unless they jumped on top of the brooder. This may be an interesting adjustment.

for the mud problems i find packing straw into it works very well. the area in front of my coop is rock hard and the water rolls off it. its kinda like how the natives made bricks with mud and straw and sticks and stuff. it works very well for me

Hi Cynthia, Yes we used plexiglass screwed into the side and sealed. I like it because now I can look from the side and not have to hover over the brooder.

Oh man, that is such a good idea, after me..having had a fusion in my neck. Plus, I think it would be great for them, they don't just see>>walls!

Hey Guys! I'm in Utah Co. If you know anyone that wants to buy chicken waterers like the avian aqua meisers, I'll be making some towards springtime to sell! And for WAY cheaper than you can find them online!
