Utah!

I think her chicks are blue laced red wyandottes, correct? They are so cute!!! Congrats on a great hatch, but I'm sorry about the deformed one. Out of curiosity, how did you cull it?

I'm a little bummed because I'm thinking that 4/5 BLRW are boys, and that my one girl is the lightest colored of the bunch. The jury is still kind of out on one. It would be amazing color, but I'd rather it be a hen.

Lisa, congrats on the incubator!!! What kind did you get? I've been told that hens can give fertile eggs for up to 3 weeks after being separated from the boys. I think you should incubate and see how it goes. How fun!

endoux. The moveable chicken tractor seems like a really good way to have chickens in a smaller yard. Two chickens seems awfully restrictive. I'm surprised it's only two. Four seems more doable to me.
Ahem, if, by chance, you want a nice pair..I just so happen to know someone that is selling a pair. I haven't seen them, but she says that the roo is just beautiful, and the hen is the darker red with the blue. Just lettin ya know.. I know you want your own babies.

So the hatch went pretty well. All eight hatched, but one of the was badly tweaked--legs not fuctioning right and toes completely curled up. I thought at first I might be able to brace the lags and make little shoes, but one set of toes couldn't even be straightened. The poor thing couldn't do anything more than flop around on it's belly. I ended up culling it after watching for a while to see is it might improve any.

On the upside, the other seven are all completely healthy and happy, looking quite robust with good coloring. Two are a little lighter and will probably be splash. I thought before that I would keep them all, but I feel so crappy the past few days and so overwhelmed with things to do that I am thinking about selling this group. I dunno, could just be that I am way to tired and sick to make a reasonable decision right now.

Anyway, i thought I would throw up some pics of the little tykes.

Cuuuute!

I just hatched out 8 blrw's they are a lighter color than yours. Hey I am moving to Fruitland next month we will almost be neighbors. If you sell some fertile eggs I will have to get some from you. Pearl
Oh, I definitely sell the eggs and likely the chicks if you don't want to incubate them yourself. I have another set of mine hatching in about 2 1/2 weeks.

Sphinx, one the baby I had to cull--I just had a really sharp pair of scissors and lopped the head off. Took about 2 seconds. Took another 15 minutes to stop bawling about it and now I'm tearing up again. I'm usually pretty practical that way, so I can only think I'm getting so worked up about it because I feel so crappy sick.

Kind of ridiculous.

Lisa, the hens can be fertile for quite a while, but would only keep up to 7 days worth at the longest..meaning, the first eggs being only 7 days.  I'm sure many have hatched them at later/longer dates, but look around on here and see what you can about the luck of setting eggs later than day 7.  I've even heard some folks say that they have had eggs in the fridge for a while, then tried it...and it worked!  Check that out on here too, because this is where I read it.  You probably don't need to worry about the ones in the fridge, because it sounds like you are getting eggs like crazy from these girls..unless you want oodles and oodles of pretty blue chickens..oh, I can't even imagine wanting that!  LOL.  Love them.
So, did you say somewhere what type of bator your Dear, Dear, Husband brought home to you.  That is too funny. Wait until I tell Scott.  Too cute.

Thanks for the info. It is a basic, Little Giant, still air, no turner---it was very thoughtful of him. Not sure what prompted him, I have not said anything....maybe he does not want to drive me to your place for chicks anymore haha, he has been teasing me. I told him a few days ago 'I wish I could go to Cynthia's and get one of those two NH" and he rolls his eyes haha. Hoping I can manage the whole process, seems like a lot can mess it up....Got the egg turning advice from you on here....morning, 3 pm, 10 pm, can I set them in an egg carton lid to prop the ends up just a bit? My first eggs are from Monday, so I want to put in everything I have on Saturday the 16th in the morning, got them all out, pointy side down, resting at room temp....the ones from the fridge included, 8 so far. Wrote on them day 1, day 2, day 3, day 4, 'x' on one side, 'o' on the other. Turned it on to get the temp figured out. I figured the bator is here, I have those eggs sitting here, might as well try the test drive!

corvidae, that's awful. You've had a lot of garbage to deal with lately, and I hope it really tones down for you after this. I'm glad that the rest of your babies came out alright, though. They look very cute!

Welcome, endoux! Your limit is two chickens? Wow, at least they didn't say you could only have one

That sounds like something I'd fight, but then, I'm not firing on all cylinders right now. I'd probably fight a sack of potatoes if it looked at me wrong. I think others here can give you much more sound advice

So I've noticed that a lot more ads for chicks are popping up on KSL. This is the first year I've paid attention to the poultry listings on there. I kind of have to wonder how much crazier it's going to get in the next month, with everything I keep reading about how people buy chicks and then sell them after Easter. I need to mind myself and keep my hands out of those chicks, too. Need to keep things manageable.

Oh, Lisa! And incubator. That's cool! I agree with Cynthia - I wouldn't try eggs past a week old, even though hens can lay fertile eggs for a couple of weeks. That just seems more sensible to me. I could never have an incubator. I'd either lose my head or I'd become overrun with chicks, hehe.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it seems the limit is two. If you have a half acre and live in a certain area of Riverton, you can have up to twenty. "Outside of those areas, chickens may only be kept as part of Riverton City's household pet allowance, which limits the total number of household pets to 2." I will look more into the chicken tractor thing. At this point, I know just about nothing, so I'm still researching, and it seems like there's a lot more information that I need to know and be aware of than I initially thought.

OK I have set my eggs in the incubator at 4:00. So far so good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I figure I will turn them at seven and then 11. Do i need to during the night also?

Nah, you don't have to turn them during the night. Before I got a turner, I turned them three times a day and they did fine that way. I did them first thing in the morning, early afternoon, then right before bed. You want to turn them an odd number of times (either 3 or five) in order to make sure they are on a different side each night.

People guess what I got!? I got 3 things I'm so excited about :)
