Ditto on the hard roof over the run area. It is so much nicer, and then the girls don't get their feathers and feet trashed from all the mud, keeps the inside of the coop much nicer, the nests much nicer, etc. Muddy run = pain in the butt. We being naive in the beginning thought the grass would stay nice in the run, it turned to dust in a few weeks. The grass is long gone and it is two feet of sifted dirt, when it rains it is very unhappy. You can put straw on top and that helps, but then it is not as nice for them to dig and dustbathe. So the money spent to frame a roof and add tin or greenhouse panels, or whatever you come up with is worth it. We just framed ours with 2x4's and added those wavy semi-clear plastic pieces on top and lifted one end up so it drains ok down at the low end outside the run. Much happier now.
