La Casa de Pollo--

Check the sides of the pullet's toes. If there aren't callouses there (In the photo, it looks like there aren't), then the problem has just recently occurred--perhaps in transit, as you speculated.

Sports tape is the best tape for toe-taping, in my experience.

Keeping her on deep, soft bedding (and--if you can--putting on Hock Cushions, which is explained on webpage below) would be important for her for a while.

To me it looks like she has a problem higher up her legs. I'd check her immediately for slipped Achilles tendons in her hock joints. If that's the problem, you may have a good chance with her if you treat it right away. There is info on this on the Poultry Podiatry page on my site linked in my sig below.

Her bones may not be quite as well developed as the other birds'; that can make it difficult for tendons to stay in place. Giving her some crumbled-up Vitamin B complex vitamins may be helpful. Choline, biotin, manganese, zin, pyridoxine, folic acid &/or niacin may be factors. Calcium, Vitamin E, Selenium may also be relevant. It may help to give her general vitamin & mineral supplements (poultry supplement added to water, children's Poly-Vi-Sol without added iron, etc.), too.

Best wishes

i was hopeing you would show up! what you said makes a lot of sense to me and it may explain a lot :)

Lisa that is to bad about that girl. I hope it can be fixed. keep us posted. And the little monster had a blast showing your boy all the animals around here.

Sasha It was nice meeting you. What did you dust your chicks with? Did that little polish need it.

Thanks Speckled! I was really hoping you would see my post and help me out with this! I am going to tape her up today and see what we can do. There is a tiny bit of callousing---but I can straighten the toes out....will go to the achilles tendon info and check into that for sure. Will let you guys know!

Brad, I was hoping the same thing..speckled is so knowledgeable in these things! I also thought the upper part of the legs looked involved, but I don't know how to treat that, never have dad to..Glad it sounds like there could be hope for this one. Lisa, you are the one to give it a try and at least try and help this one. It will be interesting to see watch the results.

Well I have checked her over really well---I am not thinking it is achilles, they are on theback nice and straight. Also her upper legs look to be ok, I think because she was so scared and I was trying to lift her up to take pics she was not posing very good for those :) it really seems to be only the toes---the middle curls in pretty bad on both sides, and the others just kind of follow suit---I can stretch them out, they turn in a little when they are straight. There are callouses on the outside edges of her feet, so she has been walking around like this for awhile. She looks to be about 3 1/2 months old, maybe even closer to 4. more full sized but some filling out to do. Of the two, she is the prettiest, her head is more ivory colored. She crouches a little when she walks, she can stand ok, and will stand up taller when i come around, like she is nervous. But she prefers to crouch a lot more than the other and does not walk around much. Do you think it hurts her? I hope not. She did stand pretty well for these pics...when she stand still they curl some, when she walks they curl completely in
This is the one that is ok :

Curly toes on left:

The normal one again---she is a little more outgoing with the camera:

Messy but you can see better here---I had to move the pine shavings over to see her toes and the water spilled

I was hoping Speckled Hills would show up too.

I would be so, so upset, Lisa. I sure hope it was a recent thing, and that it's fixable.

Otherwise, Chickenstock sounds like it was awesome (other than the fact that I didn't win anything. :-/ )

Chickenstock was fun, the people were fun..I see on that thread some pics of a few I did not say hi too, but I got to meet quite a few.

Heard from my seller, sounds like she genuinely did not notice about the toes. It really could have happened in transit I suppose. The callouses might just be she walked funny to start with, who knows **sigh** So I am trying not to be mad, things happen. I was just sooooo excited this has taken the air out of my sails. A little. I am pretty resilient. And there are more important, bigger fish to fry. And it is beautiful outside today. AND I let the new girls out of the cage just to see, and nobody is bothering them at all. If anything they are being stinkers to the others....so that is one less worry. Okay the wind is back in my sails. I was being a stinker too, cannot be having that! Thank you for allowing me to work this all out in my head on here :D :D :D

So now that we are happy again---Sasha when you get up and rolling I would love to see some cute baby pics! We lost a few that were truly ready to hatch and just did not pip. Not sure why! But the three she has are ADORABLE and teensy weensy. I cannot wait to see them on here.

I set the blue eggs in my bator last night, looks like memorial Day weekend will be camping close to home. These are nice! Not as big as the ones I had from pawtraitart---a little bluer though---I can still see a twinge of a green tint, but there are two that I really am liking alot :)

Oh and here is a fun one of me at Blujems house :) Don't mind that maniacal grin on my face, I was kinda over the top crazy happy yesterday llol

The pic of me and Sasha that Birdguy posted lol I really should have combed my hair. We had that nice cold Idaho wind going!
Maniacal grim #2:

Happy campers!

Hi!

I'm new to chickens and new to BYC. My husband brought home 8 little chicks two days ago and now I'm jumping into this whole chicken thing with great gusto. My kids and I are really enjoying those cute little fluff balls! I just have to keep them from enjoying the chickies too much. We lost one already to an over excited 4 year old who defied my orders to not touch them when I wasn't with him. So we are down to 7 but they all seem to be thriving. I don't know what breeds they are or their sex. I have a feeling that one of them is a cockerel but I really have no idea.

Anyway, we are in Pleasant Grove and really looking forward to fresh eggs and getting to know you all.
