Utah!

Hey, decided to drop by and say hello!

I used to live in Corinne, UT (north of Brigham City) and infact was born and raised there for 9 years. I had a small flock of EE's, Sexlinks, and a Wyandotte Rooster - Really do miss it, and am glad my dad still owns the the ol'house in Corinne.

where are you at? and can you post pics?

I'm in Farr West (North Ogden area)... I can try to get pics today but I make no promises

.

Also I got them from McMurray so I don't know what color eggs they hatched from. They haven't started laying yet - at least I haven't found any eggs in the barn or in the snow....my chicks all free-range though so they may be hiding them.

What colors are they (the birds, I mean). Can you post pictures, or PM some to me? Thanks!

The EE hens are varying shades of brown and the rooster is mostly white.... I need to get batteries for my camera then I'll get some pics of them to post.

Hi, there was an ad on KSL yesterday that I emailed. There's a 17 year old guy in Cedar Fort area that will do them for $2 a piece. Only at night and on the weekends.

My B.O. rooster update;

I put Ducky, my 14 week old BO rooster on KSL the first part of last week for $10 - no calls. Put him on for $5 on Friday and got a couple of offers. Talked it over with the wife, and for $5, we decided to dispatch it ourselves and eat it. But we're not telling the kids... This is our first one. Anyone with experience with this, or with kids and meat birds?

Marty

DH culled a bird last year, but she was a Leghorn and had very little meat on her. DH put her in the crock pot anyway, so the kids knew what was going on - I don't think any of them ate any of the meat (it was lousy, stringy and no flavor at all, but she was more than 6 years old).

DH drove two long nails into a board, about 2 inches apart. Then we slipped her into an old stretched out tube sock that was missing the toe end. It fit her snug with her wings against her body, but not too tight,and her head stuck out the toe end. She was very calm, not upset at all. Then he put her neck between the nails (just to hold her neck still) and used a small hatchet to chop off her head - out in the side yard where our house has no windows. It only took one stroke of the hatchet to do the job (while our kids were wailing in the kitchen, we should NOT have told them what he was going to do with "Speckles"). Our neighbor who pheasant hunts a lot showed him how to skin her. The whole deal was messier than I'd thought. I don't know that we'll do any more - the meat on her wasn't worth the trauma to the kids.

Pacsman, there's a lot of good resources over on the meat birds section (with photos and links to videos). I know I've perused a few discussions in the past about your kids questions, but I don't have any (kids) myself, so I did not take careful notes. I think it's different if you have known from day one that the bird would be meat - many folks discuss this with their kids. WIth a surprise rooster, some do seem to take the don't tell approach. Thanks for the tips on the slaughter options. I think I'll be sticking with layers this year.
