Utah!

Marking chicks.  How does everyone do it?  If any of mine hatch I need to be able to see who hatched out of what eggs?  I'vr seen leg bands but am not sure they work with chicks.  I don't mran to hog the list today but things just keep coming up

Paint their toenails lol!! Or use a sharpie and make a dot on their heads, it lasts longer. i tried sharpie on the bottom of feet but it wears off really fast. zip ties on their little legs, if you have any small enough.....

Birdguy, no turkeys to Utah. Really........:tongue My DH will be with me for impulse control!

Playing catch-up, but some of these posts thus far necessitated a response:

Oohhhhh ya, dear Cynthia, has not heard this part yet......you remember the little splash you sent to me with Red, wouldn't fit in with my age groups, then went to Cindy's (blujems and slvrphoenix) ....sooooo cute, pretty girl?....... NOT hahahahaha it really IS a boy ! All kinds of rooster spiky feathers going on and just waiting for the boy to crow. I told ya it was a boy you guys! It was faking you out. Another pretty one though. In addition to the Blue Wheaten Boy. Now karma would be no fun here.......
Sooooo payback would be my showgirl turns out to be a showguy.......Hope not! haha!

It is just too cute to part with. And it is a people loving little bird, very sweet

What?! Are you guys sure? I thought by the bum that that one was a girl, for sure. Although I admit I wondered when it was younger, but still...........That little pill. It's throwing off my Amer/EE prediction process! Don't go by spiky feathers on the neck alone. They liiiiie.

Red - Thanks for the kind thoughts. I need to learn to use the Multi button

So excited!! I have some Wheaten/Blue Wh eggs coming from Chicken Junkies and Madelyn on Wednesday. I hope they travel well. This WILL be my last batch of the year. (Someone please take my incubator away when they are hatched and store it til next year!)

It took me a little bit to learn what the Multi Quote button was for, too. And yay for new babies!

And Noooooo I am not returning with Turkeys. No. I have ruled these out until next year, then I am re-visiting the idea......hehe

But whyyyyyyyyyy not? They're fun. Granted, they do poop a lot.

so much talk of depression, i want to say i am sorry to all those that have lost people to that war. depression is something i have dealt with all my life and i also have a very long history of suicide. so i have been there and it sucks to feel that way. i think its great more people are talking about it now because there was a time not long ago it was not talked about. but anyway i am sorry for the loss of life and my thoughts go to the family. hopefully her kids will not ever step foot on that path

This is why we have chickens, yes?

Chicken therapy is very helpful for me, too. And I am so glad you are still here with us. I would be very sad to lose any one of my chicken friends! Depression can be a nasty monster, for sure. Sometimes it just takes away your ability to think straight at all. I have had those days.

Okay, and on an aside note, I posted a wanted ad on KSL for an older hen. With just the little Marans left after the raccoon raids, and the boys being headed for freezer camp, I'm worried that my single hen will be too lonely. I can tell she's already lonely for the company of other hens. She seems blue. I'm hoping someone has a stewing hen or something they just want to get rid of. Being broke is the pits, ugh.

I have a couple of teenager you are welcome to. Or an older chick

Its worth a try, right? Let me know which characteristics you think might be more blue-eggy - I'll set them aside for you.

I'm new at this, too, but my understanding was the better the pea comb, the bluer the eggs, that the genes are linked somehow... but it does make me wonder if the leg color and muffs have anything to do with it, too... so whatever you think, I guess??? You should NOT have mentioned you were getting eggs, though, ack!!! I will need some more pullets in the Ameracauna pen, so I wouldn't be able to take any from you unless they were pullets... I already have (pretty sure) 2 roos...

DITTO!!!!!

Thanks Lisa. Good thinking I will tell my sister to post the pictures on the Idaho thread. She has been having a hard time figuring how to post things but if she can't do it I will for her. Mostly she was just wondering if she had a roo. Which it looks like she does.

Sundance I'm so so sorry about your chicken. I have been out checking my chickens every hour today we are going to get to 110 degrees today. I'm worried about my broodies. They picked the worst time of the year to sit on eggs! I have a frozen liter bottle by them and I'm hoping that helps.
Sorry I can't help you with the humidity question I know someone else on here can though. Cynthia had me keep my eggs at 60 but that was a hova bator incubator.

Jill.. I messaged your sister about looking at her chicks, looks like birdguy is going to go over... but I might be able to take some of them off her hands=)... sorry I missed you while you were up here!! Glad to here your mom is doing well, sounds like she got into promontory point? I've heard good things about it (I'm a nurse at EIRMC)

I just called Vegas and the odds are definitely leaning towards a minimum of one turkey returning to Cache Valley!!!.... I just need to figure out which one is a Tom so you have some yard candy next Spring....
I think I recognize this backyard... I'll be over there maybe later today and will take a look at them...

I'm betting on the vegas odds, too=)

Oh, and Red, too bad I don't live closer... I have some extra hens=) I'm sure birdguy does too (older ones that are laying)...

Dalooras, Sundancen, I have got the coolest friends on here. Seriously. At this point, I would even take a crabby 4, 5, 6, or 7-yr-old hen!

My Marans just needs a buddy to talk "girl talk" with.

Awww, Cynthia, that was so sweet of you to give that chick to Lisa. You are such a nice friend.

Lisa, I'll keep my fingers crossed that your showgirl isn't a drag queen.

Sasha, thanks for your opinion on the beards. I think you and Lisa are right. Which means I'll just have to sit back and wait.

The-Bird-Man, I am so sorry that you have struggled with depression. I do think animals can be great therapy, which you've probably already realized.

Hattie, that bright red comb looks awfully rooish to me. :-( I'm glad you got your mom into a rehab center for her knees. It definitely sounds like the best plan for her.

Sundance, I am so, so sorry you lost a chicken. How old was she? It's possible she had some kind of defect, especially since the other birds were all ok. I'm glad that your girls have helped you with your depression as well. Marking chickens: I'm thinking I'm going to use a Sharpie. I have a friend who has asked me to buy a couple of pullets from River Rock Family Farm, and keep them til this weekend. One or two of them are dead ringers for my babies, and I don't want them to get mixed up. I've also seen zip ties in other colors.

I've been busy this week. I made raspberry jam with berries I bought from that farmer's market. Then, my neighbor's apricot tree got ripe, so I've been making fruit leather and jam with that. I've also been busy with work- some looky clients are finally ready to relocate to Utah so I've been setting up stuff for them, and I'm hopefully having a closing this week.

My STINKING Australorp never gave me the egg. She was in and out all day of the nests, getting her butt kicked by my layers, they really gave her the business. I threw them out, then they promptly ran to my garden and ate half my peas and dug holes everywhere. Meanwhile Miss Aussie sits in the nest, takes a little nap, goofs off in the nest for hours. I finally had to put the big girls back in, then they were back at it. Didn't Miss Aussie understand she had a window to get her business done? Haha.... Now she is back trying to get in the nest and getting her butt kicked.
This may take a while.....:pop

She is frantically trying to lay in the nest and having some serious anxiety. Give.me.an.egg.already. Poophead.
:rant

I just went out there and my lavender is sitting in the nest.........c'mon girls let's get this party started! I have 7 red in the face that should be laying any day! When I finally get the blue egg, I may need to be resuscitated after I pass out on the grass...
