Utah!

Lisa, I'm so glad your chicks were ok after getting so cold. It's so funny to me that your dh surprised you with them. I can't imagine any circumstances in which my dh would bring home chicks of his own volition.

Corvidae, so weird that the roosters were crowing at 2am! Do you have a light out there?  I'm still interested in maybe swapping you so that I get a traditionally colored legbar, and giving you my white legbar, and I'd even toss in my wyandotte/bcm cockerel too, if you want an extra meat chicken.

Nope, no lights. They've always done that--I just manage to somehow forget between overnight visits. It's not so bad when there aren't too many roosters up there, but right now there are way too many. I'd be happy to give you one of the Legbar boys (though heaven knows I don't want to take MORE roosters in trade!). Might be a bit tricky arranging a transfer, since I can't have them here in Bountiful at all and that ungodly crowing would be a dead give-away!

And .......

cyndi, you can look at a young chick's wings for length. The girls tend to feather out faster than the cockerals'. Having said that, Lisa and I can testify, that it doesn't always work, but often! On girls, you will see the wing tips growing out sooner.

The wing tip strategy works at hatch up to day 3 when a slow feathering bird is mated to a fast feathering bird. When both parents are either slow or fast feathering, it doesn't work. However, in some lines females will get their tail feathers sooner. That doesn't always work either, though. I tested that theory last year with my BCM and orpingtons.

Sundance, didn't hear from anyone yesterday or yet today about that P. Rock? Do you think she really wants it?

Too funny, Darth Rooster. Welcome to the crazy club.

Corvidae, maybe we can figure out when you're on your way out to the farm (is that where you're going to process them?) and I'll meet you in bountiful on your way out, that way you won't have crowing. The one little cockerel hasn't crowed yet, but I feel very confident it's a boy.

I'm ignoring the talk of children moving away because it's a topic I am not ready to contemplate.
