Whoa! I finally found out today what people mean when they refer to broody poop being disgusting. My broody girl wanted to go out of her carrier, so I opened the door and walked out of the garage for a few. Came back to check on her and was met with an awesome stink, along with several HUGE lumps of poo. She was perched on top of one of the other cages singing away - I'm sure she felt pretty good after that

I took the last bad egg that I could find, which leaves about 7 or 8 green eggs in the nest. I tried to candle a couple, but I don't really know what to look for. I found the air sac in them both - one on the big end and the other egg had it on the pointy end - but other than that, I'm not sure what to check for. Those eggs should be on day 5, so I was looking for veining. Is it too soon to see that?

However, my girl was acting like she wanted to go outside, and not back onto the nest. If she's done being broody, I wonder if I should try to incubate the eggs or just toss them. I honestly don't know what to do. They'd make a good test hatch, but

Well...I'm back and caught up!! I spent the week in Kansas City for some advanced training for work..long week but learned a lot..

The exciting news is that I brought home 3 dozen eggs from Chookschick!! I'm not sure what everything is but there are a bunch of chocolate ameraucanas in there!! Can't wait for Easter now!!

My incubator that I am building isn't getting quite up to temperature out in the garage.. got to work on it today a little.. Pictures when I get finished I promise...

Ok took some pics of the FBCM out in the coop....Looking for opinions. I thought I had 2 roosters and 1 hen but cant really tell anymore.








And of course my favorite one in the coop....Look how tall his comb is though. I really think I should replace him with one that is more true to breed.


And ya all know I couldn't post without the baby goat pic...

What a beautiful day. I was determined to spend it outside. I cleaned my smaller coup out put in fresh bedding and DE. I decided to put a few hens in so I can see who is laying what. I also have a broodie silkie that I put in there so I can put some Serama eggs under her, She did not like that and wanted to go back to the other coop. too bad she stays. It felt so nice having the sun on my face, The chicks were really cute. I let them out in a pen on the lawn where there was no snow and they loved it. It looks like I'm keeping a bunch of chicks but I kept duplicates in case they don't make it. I had some wierd accidents with my chickens last year and I had one already this year. My barnvelder fell off the truss she was roosting on and broke her neck. I had 6 chickens that decided they wanted to roost in the rafters and when I went in one morning one was dead on the floor right under the truss. Oh well. Enjoy the nice weather everyone it won't last

Ohhhh boy! The chocolate coloration sure seems to be coming into popularity, isn't it? Congrats on the nice score

I'm still battling to get my incubator up to temp. It's currently sitting at about 85 degrees, according to my Super Cheap Thermometer of Awesome that came with it. But, got my new therm today! YAY! I think I may try tucking the bator under my bed, where the heater vent blows more air. I really need to set these eggs. Otherwise...........I may just see if I can butter someone up to incubate them for me until I can get my bator figured out

Don't put your incubator close to a heater vent.... You want to put your incubator somewhere that is a stable temperature... if you have it by a window or vent etc that has drastic temperature changes during the day or night... it will screw up your incubator causing heat spikes because you will have it calibrated while the outside temperature is one temp and then when it swings, it will affect the bator.. just my 2 cents.. Good luck!!

Hi everyone. I hope you're enjoying the warm weather for a change. I just noticed today that two of our four hens seem to be raising their tail feathers and have poop around their vent area on their feathers. Both are laying every day and eating as usual. Is this something that needs attention or is it normal? Thanks for any help or ideas.

Just an update. I was able to see with a flashlight that the bird with the messiest vent looks like there is a little bit of white inside? Mystery to me....

Urban, I would clean their vents, if they're having a problem with poop being stuck. I have a few of my girls that have longer feathers/fluff around their vent and the poo will kind of get stuck from time to time.

Well, my broody girl is back on her eggs, so I guess she hasn't quit yet.

My DH helped me clean today too. It is so nice to have it all cleaned up..except, for the straw in the main coop. Waiting for the snow to melt that is around the run. It melts, and just runs right into the run.

Red, my broody's will get up of their eggs all day long. I was worried one morning when it was under 10 degrees and one jumped up of her eggs and ran out into the run with all the other hens. Im really bad at giving myself enough time to mess around in the morning. I wake up and am driving within 10 minutes, so i dint have time to see what she was up to. It was a long day at work wondering if the eggs had froze. But all turned out well, 2 out of 3 made it. The one i have in the house now gets up all day and eats and drinks and begs for treats if she see's use eating. But at night she will not move off of her eggs for anything. Birds have been doing this for ever and seem to now what they are doing. To bad they don't make an incubator that works as good as a hen.
