Utah!

Blu, I had an issue like that over the winter with my turkeys. In their case, I think it was trouble adjusting to the cold, because they were usually shivering. I moved them into the garage in their own cage with plenty of shavings and a light for warmth. The garage tends to stay warmer than outside. I also gave them some vitamins in their water and plenty plenty of food. They pulled through it alright.

I managed to move and old rabbit hutch into the utility room...It stays warm in there. I cleaned off her nose (just happened to notice it seemed blocked up) Gave her some medicated water, fresh feed and bedding. Hoping she pulls out of it.

Hey Friends....I am worried about this silky hen....She is a year old, has not laid an egg in the month or so that I have had her. I don't think she is egg bound. But she doesn't move around much, She has been eating and drinking, but this morning when I picked her up, she seems to be drooling. Water was just running out of her mouth. Not sure if I should put her down or what to do. If you have any suggestions? Should I give her an antibiotic?
I have never had one like this so I am not sure what I should do.

Thanks all

As I think about her I would give her a ml of Dex and 1/3 ml of penicillian to some tylan in her water.

OK, Would that be an IM or Subcutaneous injection?
Good idea on the goat milk hadn't thought of that.... I will try the oatmeal and see how she does.

Appreciate the help.

This is really helpful, thank you! What should I plant for the chickens? Last year my kiddos  ripped the leaves from my carrot patch to give them a treat because they were the closest to the coop- poor carrots.
i love the look of oat grass so i plant that here and there. i also do some wheat and milo and all of the above you can feed the grain and the actual plant so i wait until it has the grain then pull up the hole plant and drop a few more seeds to grow another plant. black oil sunflowers are good. mallo aka cheezys are good, i let them grow in space i do not need, in paths in the garden etc and then i just take my hedge sheers and trim some off and give it to the girls so that way it keeps the plant looking nice and i have endless amounts of green treats for the girls. it grows fast too. i do swiss chard, and greens like that. if you do not treat your lawn and have dandelions you can dig them up and throw them to the girls and with how dandelions grow it can provide your girls with a lot of feed. i do broccoli. you can do cabbage, a lot of people hang cabbage by a rope like a tether ball so the girls can have fun and then its fun to watch. comfrey is often used to feed livestock but i did not feed so much to my girls because i used it for other things, it also has a ton of medicinal uses for us humans and its a perennial. peas would be good. i feed my girls a lot of yard waste such as weeds and that kind of stuff. cucumbers and squash is a favorite, as is pumpkin. any over ripe stuff goes to the girls as does a lot of the extras. like last fall i had tons of apples that i fed to the girls. i try to make use of all the space i can so i can feed my family and animals as much as i can off of what i grow. :)

Just wanted to report that I gave the hen some goat milk and crumbled up some bread in it.....She attacked it and is eating with gusto. She seems a little perkier since coming inside.

I second Sundance's suggestion to try the cooked oatmeal. My flock goes nuts over it. They love cooked rice, too. Sounds like you're doing everything you can! I think she is still just stressed from the move, which may be why she got a little sickness.

Sooooo, I came home from work today and heard my Ameraucana singing the egg song. We've known there's another hidden nest, so I went to catch her red-handed.

I've been saying since last year that I really miss Easter egg hunts. I guess my girls heard me and took it to heart. I grabbed a box and went bush diving to collect them -- all 26 of them. Five minutes of getting scratched and one butt cramp later, I was a pretty happy camper. I texted a picture to my brother, since this was right by his bedroom window and he's been hearing them for a while. Here's our conversation:

Me - "Look what I just found"

Him - ":O..........Happy Easter? :) Chelsea was being loud by my window, I swear she knows I'm in there somehow." (Note - Chelsea is my Leghorn, also my escape artist and rebel)

Me - "Yeah, it wasn't just her, either. 26 eggs!"

Him - "Holy.....which bush?"

Me - "The bridal wreath"

Him - "I KNEW IT!!!"

Now, what in the world do I do with twenty-six questionable eggs?

LOL... I boil mine up if not too old and hasn't been brooded on, chop egg and shell fine and feed back. I've found those hidden nests before... SURPRISE!!!
