Utah!

Gary glad you mentioned pumpkins, they really do like those! I had quite a few stored in the fall and gave them one a week or so until it started freezing outside.
I plant tons of tomatoes too...we try not to use any can tomatoes, i read somewhere the acid makes the can leach chemicals that are bad news--so I can all my own tomatoes to make salsa and spaghetti and what not--I try to make enough to go the whole year, we usually have plenty extra. I tried giving my girls tomatoes last fall and they were not too fond of them, so I chopped them up and threw a bunch of bread in it and they ate it like little pigs:) What is everybody's favorite tomato? I really like beefsteak and big boy...any more recommendations on heavy producers (The most bang for your buck?) I cannot get roma to grow for some reason in my dirt, they are always puny. I like the grape tomatoes for salads too, but only plant one or two of those, then usually a dozen of the beefsteak, maybe 6 of the big boy, then i will grab a new variety and try, have not found one I like super well...I tried the heirloom tomatoes, and they are cool looking but I was not a fan of the taste, the purple ones just had an ick factor for me :(

Birdman, I knew you would have tons of great ideas, now I am writing them all down lol. What do you use comfrey for medicinally? I wrote it down to try some this year. Also I love tea, any kind, herbal, or otherwise, I remember you posted some things you could grow to make tea with, I do have chamomile, but cannot remember if there was other stuff.....if there is would you mention it again? I need to write it down this time, I meant to before and the thread moved so fast I did not get back to the post.

Blujems, glad you girl is perking up. Guess what? Sparkles junior is a "he" again. Pretty sure. :he

Daloorashens, I will still try and get you some huckleberries and bring them at Chickenstock for you :)
comfrey is also known as knit bone because it speeds up healing, sometimes it can be dangerous because it can heal too fast, so you can have a broken bone heal before its set right. it has a lot of uses, its something you will have to research. but my favorite use for comfrey is as a fertilizer, just use it as mulch around a plant or what i do is rip some up and place in a bucket of water and let sit a few days and then its compost tea. comfrey is a very good fertilizer. a lot of people will line the hole with it when they plant potatoes. i do not remember anything used for tea right now but maybe red knows some? its late and i cant think lol. it may of been lemon balm or the different mints such as orange mint? cant remember for sure. for tomatoes i love beefsteaks, i grow a lot of them. not a fan of early girls or roma. i always do sun sugar tomatoes, its a little orange cherry tomato that i am a huge fan of and when i worked in greenhouses its something i got lots of people hooked on and sold lots and lots of plants lol. they are one of the best producers i have ever seen. this year i will be doing more heirlooms. one tomato you may like is the dx-52 tomato, it was developed by usu for utah and they say it does very well but i have not tried it.

I didn't give her shots yet. Was going to last night so Mike could hold her and we had to get some hay, then we forgot. She seems good today, I need to find out what she was eating before she came here. I don't think she is used to the pellets. She sure liked the bread and milk though.
Casa sorry about sparkles jr. Every once in awhile I wonder about the rooster you brought over here, It doesn't act like a rooster.

Well, lost the other Icee chick this morning. I think it was failure to thrive. I have to say, as a breeder-in-progress, I feel I have a lot of work to do. 2/7 for a hatch and 0/7 survivors is not acceptable at all.

Red, so very sorry to hear of your chick. I too am a breeder-in-progress and have many hurdles to overcome.

Just about to put some Barred Holland, Welsummer and Who's Your Daddy eggs in the 'bator. Didn't have good luck last year. Hubby had me put it in a place I didn't feel comfortable about... my intuition was correct!! This year it still isn't going where I want it but getting closer. (Hubby doesn't put too much emotional value on critters, unlike me!! The critters are nicer than most people I know.) Hoping for a better hatch rate this time!!! My brooders are sitting empty and cold...

So she is a different hen today....Clucking for the first time since coming here. Moving around and loving the goat milk and bread (plus Jessi's leftover cereal this morning) I think she is feeling better today.

So I am thinking she has not been eating. I have a message into the old owner to see what she was eating before. I don't think she will eat the pellets we have, at least not yet.

Yay! I'm glad she's improving so much

My BO got really depressed with all of the snow this winter, so she got moved into the garage for a few months. She was much happier with the light and increased warmth, and I let her wander around the garage at will (she hates to be caged) Her depression cleared up after a few weeks.
