Utah!

That's sad Brad. Sorry. It's not an easy thing for sure. I don't think it was mean not to eat her. Especially if she wasn't a meaty bird. You can't have another bird beating up on the others like that..they will either slow down on egg production, or even stop. Sorry.

thanks cynthia. it is sad but at the same time i know it was right. i did not see my self doing this and normally i wont but this just had to be done. i love all my girls. but you would not believe how focused she was on beating up other girls. even in a cage she was still trying to do it. even my mom seeing her wanted to put her down her self and my mom has issues killing anything.... the one girl that took most the beatings thanked me after. she had been trying to tunnel under a trash can to get away. it was brutal. i just think that i gave her a very good life and let her live longer than any other person would. she was a poor layer and when she would lay they would be small eggs. she is the total opposite of my other bsl's. the flock is so much more happy and calm now. but i look forward to adding some breeds to the flock that i have been wanting for a long time. you know how i have wanted cream legbars. and marans has been on my list for a long time too.

Sad news. moved my 2 silkie chicks out into the small run saturday, all was going well until i got home and my slpash silkie pullet is gone. Just gone. Cant find her anywere. i think one of the cats got her. She was one of mine. She looked just like her dad. Big beard, big crest, big chest. she must have seen one of the Bantam RIR or Bsl chicks chicks get out and followed. The bantams are very clever and do not run from cats but attack. The silkie was probable an easy target.

Bet you don't put your babies out there too soon again. I have some Silkies hatching. I have a porcelain baby right now, with a nice beard. I have two different others in lock down, some from the same gal that I got the blues from..one that you got from me. If you want another one, let me know.
Sorry about your baby. :(

Madchicken, so sorry that you lost one

That is an upsetting feeling when you find one missing.

Birdman, sorry that Ms. B had to go, too, even though she was rotten. Her name always made me giggle.

to both you and Madchicken.

I had a scare today. My broody OE was ba-gawking loudly out back, and I couldn't see her babies anywhere. I finally found them in the neighbor's yard behind us. Went and retrieved them, thanks to patient neighbors, and then found the hole they snuck through and plugged it. While I was there, the neighbor mentioned that he's seen my turkeys on his front lawn. Well, guess who's going to be installing a turkey pen?

thanks red. i do love her name. i feel bad she had to go. when i went out to tuck the girls in seeing one less girl was just sad. i know its for the best tho. but its still sad. many of you lose some all the time and i dont know how you all do it. people do not realize how easy it is to become attached to a chicken. i guess it is good that i am feeling something over the loss of life. and gary i am sorry for your loss :( btw were you able to get your deer? and red that is scary about the chicks. your neighbors were nice to let you rescue them. and that is too bad about the turkeys. sounds like your neighbors were understanding tho so that is good. are you keeping your turkeys through winter or will they be guests for the holidays?

Ugh, sorry you had to put down a chicken. I don't blame you at all. Bad chickens can't be allowed to upset everyone else.

Red, glad you found your chicks.

Madchicken, I'm sorry about your silkie going missing. I'd be so sad.

I put an ad on KSL and got rid of all excess roosters. I'm pretty psyched. I also did a lice check on the three hens who had it the very worst, and they are all bug free!

I think my fbcm chicks are going to be ready to go soon. I am 90% sure I have 3 pullets and a rooster. Does it get any better?

Wendy..3 pullets and a rooster, how did you do that? ;)

Had a scare myself last night. About 4:30 in the morning, a chicken started to do her alarm sound..very loud! I jumped up out of bed, stuck my face to the window, and made a smacking sound with my mouth..as though you were calling a dog..just to get the attention of what ever was out there. I hurried, put on my moo moo..

, called Ziggy..my little Shcnouzer mix, he came running, I opened the door, and there was a flash running across the yard, with a dog on it's tail pretty quick. It jumped/climbed up that old fence pretty fast. I went to check out my girls in the big coop. How did they see that cat? Pretty sure it was a cat. Maybe they could hear it..smell it? I am pretty sure it went into the pop door for them to be able to tell that something was there. They don't make sounds when I go out and about at night, guess they know my feet sounds. Smart chickens! I may have to set a live trap. I've had this cat show up a few times, but not like this in the middle of the night. Or..early morning, but still dark.
