Utah!

Lisa, i think my quail are broken. I haven't got even 1 egg yet. I don't know what is wrong. I think i am going to wire a lamp up this weekend to give them some heat and light. I started the extra light on the big coop last weekend with hopes of increasing my egg count. I have 14 hens and am only getting 5 eggs a day. 3/4 of my flock is molting but i have 4 pullets that are 5-6 months old and not laying yet.

I did get lucky and sale a 3 year old hen with 3 of her chicks and a 2 month old Silkie roo last night. Just hope the Young man that bought them is up for the big increase into his flock. He wants to breed Silkies and Bantams in the spring. I sold him a pullet and a roo Bantam RIR. The silkiie roo is a porcelain,He plans on breeding it to a white silkie hen. the young man was around 12 yrs old. I hope he follows through with his breeding ideas. I love talking to young people like this. I all ways wonder if in 10 yrs they are going to be a big name in breeding and i had the chance to meet them and sale them some of my chickens to get them started.

What time at night should the light in your coop turn on and off.

Tell, I have my light come on around 6 in the morning. Have it go off around 7:30. For now. Daylight saving is coming on Nov. 3rd. this year. Will have to change it soon.

My light comes on at dusk and stays on until 10:00 pm. I turns back on at 6:00 am and back off at 7:30 am. I do have to adjust this with the daylight until i add heat lights when night time temp stays under freezing, then they are on all night long. Lots of people don't add heat lights but i have bantams and they love the extra heat at night. I leave a 100 watt light on all winter even during the day, about 20" off the floor for my bantams. If its really cold outside i can always find them in the coop under light. The large hens don't mind the cold and snow as long as i shovel a path to somewhere there is no snow, usually under the trampoline.

haha poor Gary, I don't think they are broken so much as victims of the time of year...Mine quite laying when the light started going away....probably just as yours should be starting to lay! I put a light on a timer on them and they are laying like crazy again, it took about two weeks. i bet that will help!

Thanks Red, Cynthia, Sphinx, Brian (anyone else I missed!) on condolences to my carcass devouring witnessing incident. It was so disgusting. I have since found a home for the juvenile boys that survived, and I have a lone girl out there. In a cage for sure...and awaiting company from the next group of grow-outs. She is lonely but she will survive.

On a good note, I found homes for 13 boys yesterday, and my 16 quail chicks/roosters are getting sold tomorrow and my garage is returning to a normal state :) Yay! I am so done with chicks :tongue (for a few months at least!)

I just realized I don't have any hens laying yet. Haha. if my chicks are only Three weeks old can I take them away from the mom

Tell, what I was watching yesterday tells me they may need another two weeks.

I'm thinking that big white girl should start laying pretty soon. She was hatched at the end of May. So will be 5 months by the end of this month. She may lay in Nov. If she doesn't crow first.

No really, it's got to be a girl. No crowing yet. Just those really long legs. She looks good/healthy Tell. All of the girls did. You are doing a great job with them. That black girl should lay within a couple of months. I know..we all do..how hard it is to wait for that first egg! It will happen. Are you going to put a light/heat out there for them? They will lay through the winter for you if you do. Some folks don't believe in doing that. I put a heat lamp out, and that seems to be enough light for them.

Lisa..I had the prettiest SG hatch! I think it's a white, if not, then a splash. A nice big muff and bow tie! On my goodness! If it's a boy..will you want it? Not sure if you are wanting a nice looking SG boy. I will post pictures later. Also had two nice blue silkies hatch, another SG, that is blue, and a Bantam Ameraucana..black..that Brian wants. She is a sweetheart already.

Off to church, have a great day everyone!
