I hope they hatch for you Karen. I have never hatched this bantams eggs. They never were fertile. She never let the rooster breed her until after this last batch of chicks. She lays eggs for a month or two then goes broody. She has raised 3 clutches of eggs. I have always wondered how the chicks would look. She is breed with my bantam RIR. Her name is Momo. She is one of my incubators that i will never part with. I have 2 of her eggs under my broody right now.

I hope all 4 that I know for sure are developing hatch. I would be sad for a lonely chick. Plus my 5 year old is counting the days down. She's already asked if we can do this again. Lol. She's like can we do it for my birthday so my chickens have the same birthday. She's too much.

If..by chance...you have a lonely chick...I will probably have one soon after yours hatch. I really think you will get a few. Remember, we set around the same time. Mine being EE's, I think I set a day later than you. Sat. will be a week for me with those. Then, I have Rhodebars and Buffs that have been in for a couple of days. I should get something! There are a few light OE's in with those EE eggs too. Hope they hatch me a girl.

Karen, that's so exciting! I always get so squirmy excited when I can see the veins starting and the little eyeballs in the eggs!

On the feed question, I have been getting mine from IFA most of the time. Birdman mentioned a while ago that they sell bags of whole grain for a little bit cheaper than the mixed stuff, so I've been alternating between red wheat, white wheat, and millet, always mixed with a bag of the sweet feed for horses, which is barley and corn with molasses. My girls gobble it up and seem to do well on it. I usually get 100-125 lbs of feed every two or three weeks, averaging about $15 for a 50 lb bag, including tax. I would really love to get a grundle of grain from Delta, one of these times.

One of the Seramas made my heart skip today. She was nestled in the corner looking all fluffed and contented and I thought, "Oh, sure! Now you go broody - after I gave your eggs to the other hen!" Turns out she was just laying an egg and was mighty pleased with herself. So, my cute little SBEL now has four eggs. 'Cause she's not spoiled.......

That honey would sell like crazy on KSL I think. I'd be tempted to buy some too- Raw, local honey is FANTASTIC natural treatment for people with outdoor allergies.

6kids, what kind of incubator do you have?

I have a GQF 1588 Genesis. I have only hatched one time in it last year which was the eggs I got from you and a few olive eggers of my own. I am pleased with it so far it was a hard decision between spending the extra money on a Brinsea. On the feed discussion we have also bought hog mash at Moroni Feed to get a higher protein.

So its like a blizzard outside. All the girls were huddled together under the pine tree, of course they were out of the weather, well the blowing snow, but I actually went and caught all 18 girls and officially fully locked them up in the coop. This is the first time this whole winter I've locked them completely up. Usually they have their chicken door open, but I didn't want them to adventure back outside in the blowing snow. Let me tell you…. they are some mad chickens. Not sure why they want to be outside in this weather, and they are by no means crowded in their coop. Oh well they are just going to have to deal till the wind stops blowing snow everywhere.

hi all, glad my Seramas are being good for u red. enjoy them. My grandkids are driving me crazy wanting to hatch eggs. I told them we would when I get back from Mexico I'm leaving here next Wed driving to RockyPoint Mexico. Staying with friends until Monday then back home. The dogs are loving this warm weather. We are all happy happy happy.

What are your favorite breeds for foraging? (My aunt wants to get some good bug eaters...)


I've heard that different breeds are better scavengers than others... is this true?

Red beat me to part of this, land race breeds such as Icelandic and Swedish Flower Hens, are good foragers. From my own experience, Bresse are insanely good foragers. Love those birds.
