Utah!

Thanks Lisa. I sure hope it turns out to be a pullet. Its just starting to get its crest feathers. The other two are the ones I'm confused about. They had huge domes and like a Silkie chick and even looked like a Silkie but their feather are coming in straight. I'm pretty sure they came from Spike but they are not frizzled and they dont have the Silkie feathers going on. They are really cute and one has black spots coming in like a paint. That would be cool.

That would be awesome! I love the paint look. You have a fantastic assortment of cuties there! Crossies the frizz is a she, that would be so cool. I had a silkie chick hatch with regular feathers last year! Came from shipping eggs, so not sure what the deal was, but all were fuzzy feathered except the one. maybe there is some recessive gene way up the line that makes that happen?

Gary, I am just plain tired of hatching. Finally. I think that would be fun, just let a broody do it from now on. When I get a broody, I will decide if she stays broody. :) Sure didn't expect this leghorn to go broody, it's been fun. She's a good mama. They are Diana's, and I am starting to see some frizzle come out. Going to be fun to see how they turn out. I want to keep one or two of the chipmunk ones..just hatched two more. She says they are legbar mix. One has feathered feet.

Cynthia if you ever wants some chicks to replace your flock and you don't have a broody just let me know. I usually have a broody hen and if not i have my Brinsea. Maybe you should think about one of the Brinsea Mini Advanced. It only holds seven eggs and its idiot proof (that's why i got one). All you have to do is fill the water reservoir ever couple days and at lock down take the turning disk out and put a paper towel in it.

Edit..You could even supply the eggs.

Ace, sorry about your chick. I have to wonder if she got sick or too hot or ate something bad? I lost one this morning from the heat :( my babies will be spending their days inside where it's cool, now.

Just wanted to share a laugh I had today. We had the chicks out with us, and they kept demanding attention from DH while he was trying to read something. Two in particular kept jumping up, then down, up, down, etc.

Since my last post i decided to open the gates to all the runs so the 4 hens with chicks could get some fresh grass and mingle with the flock. I was a little nervous because two of the hens are Silkies (Twister and Dandelion), one is a small/medium size frizzle (Spike) and the other is a B-EE (Momo). I think since all of my flock has been raised around chicks except 6 4-month old pullets i got to replace my egg layers in a couple month that everyone is getting along so far. The young pullets and 1 year old OE's have quickly learned that even a bantam hen with chicks is dangerous. But the coolest thing so far and this is a first, Dandelion and Spike have decided to sleep in the big coop with the rest of the flock tonight. It is so funny, the little chicks are up on the roost bar with their moms and everyone is giving them some room except the Cochins that sleep in that corner of the coop on the poop shelf. I have a ramp in the coop for the silkies to walk up to the roost and the little chicks must have followed the hens up the ramp and then jumped the ten inches up on the bar. You can just see the Cochins in the bottom of the picture. Even though my Cochins are only 4 months old and as big as most of my laying hens they are at the bottom of the pecking order, even under the smallest 2 bantams.

that is adorable

Next we went to pick up our lovely new rooster. We asked if he had a name and since he did not we decided to call him RC (Rooster Cogburn). He is staying the night in the new coop, its first occupant. He is letting the world know there is a new sheriff in town. That boy can crow! I'll put him in a pen with the other birds for a week or ten days, for everyone to get used to each other, and then see what happens.

Thank you pfrosty for the very nice Barred Rock rooster, it was worth the six hours it took us to retrieve him. You and your nice family can feel good that he is in a safe new home where he is wanted and welcome. Thank You.

RJ - Fun meeting you yesterday. I hope he works out great for you. Glad to hear he has a name now as well! Send pics later, my kids would be interested in seeing what his new home looks like.

Oh..I also have an egg turner for sale. I only used it for two hatches. Works great! 20 on ksl when I get around to it..15 for someone here. :)

pfrosty,

Yes, thank you once again. We just love him. He spent the night in the new coop I am finishing up for the new lay house. Our very first visitor. We went to PetSmart and got a large dog cage this morning to keep him in while we have our meet and greet sessions. With animals, I tend to work slow, their time schedule is not in step with people. So in a week or ten days we will let them all get together and see how that goes. He has quite a loud crow… and seems to know how to use it. Often.

We also picked up some crickets and worms for him. He did ok with the crickets, but seems we will have to teach him about worms. I put him in the large dog pen in the shade on the grass and he seems to be enjoying the green offerings. A very nice looking bird for sure.

There seems to be two kinds of chicken math at play here. The one where you go for two chickens and bring home ten, and then go back for more. And a weird way of chicken money math. Over breakfast this morning the lovely wife and I were saying how nice it was to be able to get a free rooster (chicken). It only took us six hours to complete our pickup journey, 15 gallons of fuel, 120.00 for the nice new dog cage to keep him in for ten days, and 11.00 worth of crickets and worms. And we haven't had him a full day yet. But we are ok with it.

We will enjoy him a great deal over time. And the way the wife has taken to him, I fear he shall never feel want. A king if you will, to preside over our country flock. I really like this Utah thread, and the folks in it.

Better run and check on RC (Rooster Cogburn), he might be in need of something.

RJ

Amanda,

Here are some shots of the Chocolate Orpington chick I hatched out from your eggs. Do you think it's a pullet?? How close does it look to your chick?
