My grandpa says to feel the bum bones beneath all the fluff. If you can only fit one finger between the pelvic bone, they aren't ready to lay, two fingers wide means it should be really soon!

I heard the egg song coming from the coop today, but no egg. Does anyone know how long after they start to sing that they lay their first egg?

I'm curious to know too.... what about 'the squat' anyone know how long from when they start the squat?

Well if they're particularly coy little teases, like my girls were, they squat a couple of months before they lay. However, this seems to be an extreme case, so I would guess sooner than that.

My little bantam cochin starting squatting about ten days ago..got an egg yesterday. I saw her checking out the nest boxes about a week ago. Cute little pinkish egg.
It varys from hen to hen..should say, pullet to pullet. My leghorn only checked out the nest boxes for a couple of days..has not ever squatted for me, but was laying an egg just after those couple of days. My Rhodebar took a little longer checking out the nest boxes..close to a week..then the egg..no squatting either.
RJ..my barred rock looks to be about the same age as your girls. She is also getting that pretty red face. Something I love about the Barred Rocks. She has .. almost...squat for me. See the feet going, hunches down a tiny bit, then runs. lol..she should be laying soon.

My Missy .. dog.. is ready to have those pups anytime now. 63 days is on Tues. I can sure feel them moving around in there. She looks bigger than last time..oh dear. :/

Whats everyone's suggestion for flooring in the run? I was thinking about filling the run and maybe the coop floor with sand. I heard it helps with drainage & that they love to dig/bathe in it. I would use shavings inside the actual nest boxes. I have read mixed reviews though on using sand. Some people say it will rub the feathering off the silkies feet? If I were to use it, i would use straight sand and not add it with anything because it would make it hard to clean. I would want to be able to rake through it, to keep it clean and poop free. Right now they have a solid dirt ground that I go over with a rake to manage the poo, because me and my lil girl go in there often to play with them. So I am trying to decide between leaving it dirt the way it is, or putting sand down.
