Utah!

So I got brave and checked on momma, man she went from sweetheart to killer. She has 2 under there, and from what I could see, one looks dark blue maybe black, and the other is hopefully a splash, but not sure what they look like as chicks, looked a dingy yellow with blue. Not sure on the other 2 eggs, shes in attach mode, so I just took a quick peek. I guess I will have to wait till she shows them off. Because she is one mean momma.

In the continuing story of my prize rooster, Roster Cogburn, well the lovely wife likes to dress up the meals to the point that one would think they are or were in New York City. It would seem that this habit has extended to the roosters treats as well. Yes that is a dash of mealworms on a end slice of fresh watermelon. Rooster Cogburn signaled his approval by giving us the roosters thumbs up. Now that is something to crow about.

Best to all and their birds,

RJ

Thank you Cynthia, we have really enjoyed him round our place. And much like any proud 'parent' I am not ashamed to share him you kind folk. I told pfrosty, from whom we acquired RC from that I would chronicle his times and life up here in Cache Valley. His boys wanted to know, where he went, and what would become of him, so I try to keep a few things up for his family. In fact… as luck would have it, I have another shot of our proud bird ready to share.

I understand he is saying, "You looking at me?"

Best to all and your birds, big and small,

RJ

So its official, my Silkie is the proud momma of 2 babies. She was out of the box for a quick second when I was out mowing the lawn or I would have shot a few photos. I hurried and candled the other 2 eggs, I never candled after day 14, and they were both quiters, blood rings and all, so I pulled them. But there are 2 very tiny fluffy's. Both have pretty good beards and vaults. So one is like a Dark Blue, the other one is like a little creamy blue color. Is that a Splash? They both were out of eggs that were marked Splash x Splash. Anyways, after 1 minute in the box looking at the other eggs, in flew momma, she doesn't like you any where near those babies. Man, she is the sweetest lap bird usually. Hopefully in a day or two she's not so bad. I will have to get photos up. They are so cute. Thanks again Gary!

Congrats on your new peeps!
Didn't realize how often eggs "go bad" rather than hatching. Is is just the breed or pretty normal for chickens!

Well I've gotten eggs from Gary before, and usually have only 1 not hatch. This time 1 was not fertile, and then the other 2 just quit. It could have really been because it was so hot for a few days, and it was above 100, even though my hen house in 100% in the shade, doesn't get any sun. I'm wondering if they just got way too hot under momma. Or if it was because in the last week, one of my LF kept kicking momma Silkie out of the box, and sitting on her eggs. So I moved her to her own pen at 17 days along, so it could have been me even moving them at that point. But I was very slow and careful to not turn them. But who really knows. But momma seems happy. Super mean, but happy.

Ha ha..even more cute! I have a beautiful Heritage Barred Rock out there, she has really gotten very pretty this last couple of weeks. Wish we could get these two together, then wish I could have one of my girls go broody. Wishful thinking isn't a bad thing, not a bad thing at all.

We are going to have our chickens finally at our place starting tomorrow. I pen was finished in the dark so hopefully it looks as good tomorrow as it did tonight. It will be nice not having to drive 30 mins to check on them.

The only thing that might stop the chickens moving tomorrow is my boy who is sick. We had to rush him in to the Dr yesterday because of high fever and he couldn't sit up on his own. they said it is a virus and sent off samples to see if it is west nile.
