Utah!

So, I received my first egg last week (7/27), and I'm so very excited... I can't wait for all of my pullets to start laying!

I've got one that will be laying very soon, and then not sure when my silkie will be, but maybe 2 - 3 weeks. But then I have 3 that will be about 10 weeks before they start laying

I can't wait because one of them will be my easter egger :D (the other two are a golden and black sex link)

What's funny is, I have wooden eggs in the nest box to show them where to lay (was keeping them in there for my second one that will be starting to lay real soon), I moved all the wooden eggs into one box, and my current hen, (light brahma) will choose the box with the other eggs in them haha!

She has given me 7 eggs so far, one was a soft shell (the second one) (that was VERY weird!)

I'm so very excited to keep getting eggs! it makes my day to open the box and see a fresh laid egg in there

I really like the picture you took of him shaking his head. its so unique. In my opinion that would make a perfect calender entry
And my favorite was the one with the deer!

Congrats! Those first eggs are always the most fun. My silver laced Wyandotte and cuckoo marans started laying the last few weeks. It never gets old! New colors and sizes are always fun to add to the egg basket.

hi all. red i am ok with the smoke for a change for the most part. tho this humidity sucks but i am ok. just been busy. how about that rain we got today? my one ee still decided to sleep in the run lol

What does it mean when an egg sounds like glass when you tap on it? I have a bator full of eggs, 40 plus and they all sound like normal eggs. This one seems to have a developing air cell, it is hard to see much past that as it has a dark shell, but if bumps another egg while turning or I tap on it it sounds just like glass it is soooooo weird. Is it bad? I have never heard an egg make this sounds before when it is tapped... :/

Whew, lots to catch up on! Love the pictures, welcome newbies, and that is one spiffy custom coop!

None of the turkey eggs made it :/ I am loosely considering trying to find newly hatched poults to put under my hen. She's such a great mother.

Anyone else have moulters already? I've got two, maybe three. One of my roos and my BR hen, who is so embarrassed that she doesn't want to be handled or seen. Poor thing.

bitsy, it is fun to get first eggs! And, yes, we get some weird ones once in a while. The squishy ones are fun. :)

Brad, yes! The humidity is nooo fun. It makes it feel warmer than it is too. But, having said that, enjoying the rain. We need it. We got a lot down her too, along with some good size bouncy balls. :) Could hear it hitting the glass on my back door. Not big enough to hurt anything. Chickens hid until it was done.

darn it. I hope you can find some. You have had bad luck

Hi fellow Utah chicken people!

I am new to this chicken business. I live in the Millcreek area and have 6 chickens (2 EE, 1 BO, 1 red sex link, 2 polish). I have discovered this week a worm problem, looks like round worms. Noticed 1 a few days ago, then one yesterday. Chickens seem to be doing well otherwise. Treated them with Safeguard yesterday (after reading lots of info on this site and elsewhere), found 2 small piles of worms this morning. Planning on treating them again in 10 days.

My question is--do you all deworm your chickens regularly? Or just when you see evidence of worms? Not sure what the standard is given our climate, wanted to get some feedback.

Thanks in advance!

JWidd great question...I have seen lots of references to worming here and wonder the same thing...

Heading to SLC in a bit to pick up a BR hen from Lisa to replace my rooster who wasn't allowed in the city limits here in AF...crossing my fingers that she gets along with the others in the little flock. I know who the "head" hen is and the flock gets along well with each other but there is a pecking order for sure.
Stay out of the rain everyone!
