Utah!

Well, I moved my little Banties from the shop brooder to the new coop last evening. Their first full day of natural light and utter darkness, but a ton more room and clean as a coop can be. I hung a little grit feeder for them today and they thanked me by trying it out… seems to work.

Of course the coops not done, but this got me to wondering if anyone, ever, waited until a coop was ALL done prior to moving some birds into it. My guess is that it has not ever been done. I've to put the shingles on still and some outside trim, that sort of thing. I do love it, fresh pine shavings, afternoon sun, state fair smell. It has been a swell day checking up on the little darlings and primping this and fluffing that, you know the indulgent bird keeper and his/her little ones. But I suppose this is what it is all about, satisfaction that the place is up to snuff and the birds are healthy. Been a nice Sunday.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

You do have a lot of bantams. What kinds do you have

I have silver/gold Sebrights, and BBRed, Ginger and Silver Duckwing OEGBirds. And it is a gaggle of them, they are a bunch of fun and fliers for sure. Glad to give them their wings… they are and have been enjoying the larger space. They will be six weeks old on the morrow. Perhaps and egg or two for Christmas? You never know. I also have a pair of mystery birds that came with them, they look to be OEGB's but of a color or type I do not know. We are calling them chocolate for the time being, they have white spots on the darker background, perhaps a splash or…? It will be fun to find out at some point down the road, I was glad to see I have both a pullet and a cockerel.

Best to you and your birds,

RJ

RJ, you banty flock is adorable! I am seeing a lot of little boys in there, are you going to keep roos for the sebrights? If so I might see if I can buy some eggs next spring :D I love those, they are sooo pretty.

This coop is amazing you guys! I saw it first hand, see the painted beadboard on the inside? The Taj Mahal of coops. Very nice, love it! Thanks for sharing pics.

Also, I have a few silkie chicks left if anybody is interested! Anybody going from Logan to Spanish Fork in the next week or so? Holler if you can give a couple chicks a ride to Cynthia's :D

Lisa, yes we are going to try to keep a couple of roosters for each type, sort of a start to some pens of the little birds I like best. I favor the little chickens, and I love the ones Liz & sundance have, perhaps next year for those. I've got a ton of stuff to do the the two coops I am working on now, to start a third for them… but you never know.

Does anyone know when the chickens are in at the Box Elder County fair? I'd like to take an early peek if they are there today or tomorrow. I have always seen some very nice birds over there. Yesterday as we were enjoying a nice and slow Sunday, Karole and I went and sat with the Banties. We decided to give them a treat that they seem to love, a beef hotdog. It causes quite a frenzy, these little guys are meat eaters. We also christened the 'move' to the coop with 100 large crickets dumped in the center of the floor for a mad house of activity, hopefully everyone got at least one of them.

Best to all of you and your birds,

RJ

Your not going to believe this.. We were doing a drive in the canyon and saw 2 obviously domestic chickens on the side of the road looking very confused. They were obviously dumped there! They weren't too hard to catch and are very docile and sweet. I got them home and they were very thirsty and hungry! What is wrong with people?? One of them is those beautiful Araucanas with the fluffy cheeks! I'm pretty sure both are hens but I'm not sure with the larger breeds like these. The Araucana is big but has small comb, and the other is a smaller brown average looking chicken. Neither have spurs so I'm guessing hens. I checked them for bugs and they have none. They look great and don't appear sick or anything, just very thirsty & hungry. They need a good home after their ordeal. If anyone wants them and can pick them up tonight before I go in to have my baby tomorrow please let me know. :)

how sad!!! if someone wants them, but isn't able to pick them up tonight, I may be able to house them temporarily for you. I'm at my max of 6 hens... so I won't be able to keep them.
