Utah!

funny how so many of us share interests :) for those looking at almond trees you should plant one called "all in one" its the best one imo. for off grid stuff we put in a wood stove, its super efficient and actually burns off the smoke so its not trashing the air. its great to lower the gas bill and plus we would have heat if the power or gas went out :) heating with wood is actually very environmentally friendly

Sold! I think you can have them outside in warm weather, but you'll need to keep it inside for the colder months. Where are you at, again? We can figure out where to meet when the seedling is ready to go home with you

I don't know if they need companion trees or not

I need to check my research notes. I think they're self pollinating, though.

Lisa, I work in Murray. If you want a seedling, I'll hold one for you until we know if we can get it to you or not

I'm so excited to have them! Where is Derald at?

Ok, that's all the trees for now. If I have more sprout, I'll say on here.
I'm in Springville (Utah County, not too far from Cynthia ;) ) My husband works in Lindon, and I can probably meet as far as Cabela's (at the point of the mountain) if we wanted to arrange something at some point.

Been forever since I have posted...kind of been a busy second half of the year for me.
Just wanted to update for those who helped me when we had a predator raid the chicken coop back in Sept. We ended up loosing 4 of our 6 hens and one was badly injured as well and one just disappeared.
So, I was left with one RIR (Mabel) and one GSL (Maudie) who was the injured girl. We thought she had lost her right eye and was badly clawed (?) on the right side of her neck. Was scared she wasn't going to make it however we were blessed and she seems to have made a full recovery minus some areas on her neck that probably won't ever feather out again but who knows as she has been a real survivor.
Almost two weeks ago one of my neighbors posted on our LDS Ward Facebook page that someone had brought them over a "lost" hen that they thought might belong to them but it didn't and wondered if she was missing from anyone elses flock. I told her that I would love to come and check her out in case she was my missing girl. Turned out she wasn't but is a very sweet friendly girl and I took her home and now we have 3 hens.
They are all doing fine and for the first time I had 3 eggs in the nest box on Sunday! That means that injured Maudie and new girl Minnie laid their first eggs for me since the attacks and since Mabel continued laying pretty well non-stop it's a great day here!
I am hoping to add to my little flock again, probably in the spring so I don't have to babysit little ones through the winter.
I sure miss all the other ladies but am glad that I still have these three to keep me company.
DH finally has insulated and sided the coop and it's been painted a lovely barn red...I will try and post a pic soon and it just needs the trim and the siding on the small door but looks very nice and these girls are lucky to have such a nice home in my not so humble opinion.
Hope all is well with you all and I will try to follow the posting more often.
Thanks for all of your advice and keep your chickies happy!

Should I be concerned at all with mice in the chicken coop? I have seen them scurrying around in there and it appears they are making a home under the chickens coop (house). Theres plenty of holes where they are running in and out from under the coop and eating any fallen chicken food. The food is mounted in an auto feeder on the coop and theres always food on the ground no matter how much I try to limit the mess, there always is one so it looks like a buffet for mice. Is this a problem having mice around in there or is it just normal? I dont mind, so long as they arent going to pose a health risk on my chickens. Thanks

I was thinking of putting those poison traps (the kind that the mice go into the trap where the poison is concealed) and putting them under the coop where no chickens can reach. Its where the mice have been living I think, and is out of reach from anything. I only have a dog but he's not the type to eat a dead mouse if he found one. I think this would be the easiest way to deal with the problem. I really dont like seeing mice caught in traps so if I can use poison, I think it would be much easier.

another thing to think about is if the chickens find them and eat them like if a mouse eats some bait and then goes dies in the coop you might have some dead chickens. you could use rodent gas bombs under the coop but the worry is the gas leaking into the coop. but out of rodent gas bombs or the poison bait i would go for the gas bombs. but there is also the chance they can stink but you would have that with both options

I am betting they are all under the coop. I have the coop on 3in legs, sitting on top of big pavers and ive seen the mice going under it so they are hiding on both the pavers and under the pavers where the dirt is. I would be surprised if they are actually inside the coop. Ive seen how the chickens act with small birds, and if they spot a mouse, ive seen them run at it, so i'd imagine they wouldnt let them inside the coop. But i've heard that mice can sometimes go inside the coop and chew on their feathers at night and that worries me. I would think the mice would die under the coop where they are hiding and not where the chickens can find and eat them but its not knowing for sure that worries me.

Don't use poison! Your chickens may eat a mouse, and it could die from the poison in the mouse. Yep. :/

I wouldn't do poison. you are still best with a trap.

I have not tried this one personally, but it will probably do the trick... (look up on amazon) Victor Electronic Mouse Trap M2524

or, if you make sure to get it under there far enough, you could do the glue traps... that way, they just get stuck, you are not snap trapping them...

Victor Kill & Seal Mouse Trap 2 Pack - M265 (again, look up on amazon)

the other traps that I like using, are the Victor traps, that are the easy set ones

Victor M130 Quick Set! Mouse Trap

If you're squeamish about the mouse traps, beg your hubby to do it :)

mice can get out of control quickly.

oh, I guess one other alternative.... get a cat.. I know they can't get into the coop area... but it will keep the mice down on your property.
