Here she is, with a few others..they are all in the run now, and actually handling it pretty good..accepting it. With the snow coming down, they don't seem to mind.
My little Grey mixed colored EE is really pretty, and I also love my white EE..puffy faces! I should get colored eggs from them.
Got another egg from my NN today.
That's a RSL up front. I love love my leghorn's comb. That's the floppiest comb out
of all the leghorn's I've had. She is sooo sweet.




There's my RIR..one of the most quiet birds I've ever owned! This one, I've has some noisey
RIR's before, but this hen is the most quiet ever in any hen I've owned. Look at how poofy
my EE is.

My young white EE..she is getting more poofy too.

My Leghorn and RSL is going to Brian soon. The little chicks I bought are getting big.
They will be going into the big coop/run next month, so need to get these down. Keeping
my NN and EE's for sure. I have a black sexlink for the first time coming up, and another
RSL, along with another EE..that pheasant looking color, and a brown sex link..a first for
me. Hopefully a RIR, not sure of the sex yet..the combs on them can get big fast..and
another leghorn. That's why the RSL and the Leghorn will be going.

My very first girl was a sweetheart. My second wasn't..tried again, again, a little stink. So, crossing fingers for this little one. I think she will be fine because she will be with the same flock when they start laying.

Both of th BSL's I had didn't like to be handled, but they were pretty mild otherwise. Laid great, too. Boy I miss my pink-egger.

Hi peeps! Just catching up on the post and hoping every one is doing good. I did have to turn on some heaters to keep the water from freezing, man winter came fast! I have a cookie tin heater in with the Quail that keeps the water from freezing and my big water fountain is now sitting on its custom cookie tin base plugged into a thermal cube. I love thermal cubes!!! I have two hens with chicks but they have 60 watt lights in their coops and it seems to be keeping their water free from ice so far. I think i will take the chicks away from one of the hens and put her back with the flock and replace her with a Silkie that has gone broody. I have 16 eggs that are just asking to be hatched. Is anyone else hatching eggs? The last two customers that i have had say they have been looking all over for chicks but cant find any because of the season.

Diana, the little ones are doing good. I sold the silver partridge Silkie that was in with them so now they only have the splash to keep them company. It is so funny to watch the Silkie chick try to hid under the Serama's, it looks more like its trying to give them piggy back rides.



Anyone else notice this is the same corner that most of my brooder pic's are taken of. It must be the favorite corner no matter the breed.

They seem to start their little lives in this corner. Even the wet chicks just hatched seem to find their way to this corner.

They are precious. I am in Phoenix now and its 80 degrees. Glad I left before the bad cold hit

well I've been crazy busy lately. A lot of work. Too much work. LOL But just thought I would stop by and say Hello. Hope everyone's birds are doing good in this cold weather. This year I decided I'm going to try out a water heater. Last year I just used a rubber bowl and dumped out the ice 2 times a day. But this year I need something that keeps it from freezing since we are going out of town, and the neighbor will be looking after the girls, but I don't want her to have to come over 2-3 times a day. So I'm nervous to put anything in there. Since our coop is under our house deck, and 2nd, I put down a whole bail of straw for them to spread around the coop floor. So they are usually on at least 3 inches of straw and not on the frozen dirt. So I'm nervous something will catch on fire. I never used a heater last year, and the girls seemed just fine. This year I think I'm going to string an LED bright white rope light in there on a time and hope its enough light, because I've only gotten 1 egg a day for the last 2 weeks. I don't want to put a heat light out there, because we do loose power where we live a few times a month. Nothing more then a few hours, but I don't want the cold shock on them. But the no eggs is starting to drive me insane. Last year I gave them a break, didn't bug me at all, but now I give eggs to my inlaws, and we are used to eating a lot more then I would if I was buying them. I haven't seen eggs since the end of September/beginning of October from my Maran, NN, Houdan, and my older RIR and EE's. Not sure if its because they are going on 2 years old or more so from the light, but its making me sad that I think I need to get replacements for them next spring.

So on the watering issue. I got on of those red heated base fountains. I thought about the dog bowl, since that's kind of what I did last year with the rubber bowl, but decided to just go chicken water fountain. I'm planning on putting it up on cinder blocks so its not on the ground with all the straw. Anyone know how hot those get? I really nervous about all the straw catching on fire. Yes, I'm one of those worry its going to happen Chicken Little type when it comes to stuff like that. HeHe.

It's only19 degrees here right now in Spanish Fork.

Hi Karen. I also use a heated bowl. I just came from out there to empty the old water and refill it. I thought to feel how warm it was..I didn't even feel the heat. I have used one for used, but I don't have it near straw, I have it in the coop, where I use shavings..could have the same worry, but I don't. I also have it up just a little on a board, but that's to keep them from scratching the shavings into the bowl.
I use a timer for light. That way they have the night with lights out.

Well after reading back a few pages, I might take back this $45 sucker and get the dog bowl one. That way I can just add water to it and not have to take it apart in the freezing cold to fill it.

As for the lights, I was planning on doing a timer for a few hours in the morning and night. I miss my chocolate eggs, and colored eggs. All I'm getting now is a medium size new RIR pullet egg.

45 bucks? Yes, I just use those dog looking bowls, but you can find them in the chicken isle.
