Utah!

Should I put a heat lamp in with my silkies? I'm just worried because of their hair like feathers that they'll be cold and freeze.

So how does one get an SBEL? Is it a leg horn over an ameraucana hen or vice versus?

Typically a nice Ameraucana Roo from a pretty blue egg is paired with Leghorn Hens. The offspring are peacombed and lay nice blue colored eggs, (big size, big quantity like the leghorn Mom). Don't know if it works the other way around with a leghorn roo, have not seen anyone try that :)

Mine have been fine so far with no heat this winter. When it was below zero the end of December I put an 85 watt spotlight in the coop for the 12 week olds but the older ones did not seem to go under it at all.

I am not sure how many hens he has laying, if there are enough to lay more than 25-30 that he can collect in a weeks time I will grab extras for you and Sundance..... If not that many, I go every now and then and could get more on the next trip. I really like these, and want to keep 12 chicks, to try and get 6 hens, I have to rehome most of mine this year they are getting older. I will for sure keep your name written down if I get extras. I could see if he has chicks at chickenstock in May too if you still want them that late in the season.
Don't worry about us for this trip. That's kind of you, very kind from the sound of it ha ha We can wait. :) Thanks.

Does anyone here know if it's legal to own captive bred (domesticated) canadian geese here in Utah? I've been trying to research it and haven't really found anything on it, mostly what I've found is don't harass the wild ones lol. Duh!

I don't think we are in for any freeze too soon.. :/ Crazy weather here! Into the high 50's and low 60's this week and next! We are in trouble this summer!

I do have a heat lamp for my silies..up high. They just use it at night, they are only 2 months old. Doing well out there.

Funny story, we culled our rooster about two months ago. Mornings are often a crazy time around my house so I haven't been paying attention, but I just noticed yesterday that I am still getting fertile eggs! I have four youngsters around 17 weeks old. Turns out we must have a hidden cockerel in our midst, I guess! So funny! No crowing yet, though. I had one EE I was pretty sure was a cockerel, but am now somewhat certain is a pullet. Guess it must be my mystery Australorp I haven't been able to tell the gender of. So strange. I thought at first that one was a pullet, but the legs seemed pretty thick for that. I guess time will tell who the amorous stranger is.
