I am seeing the evidence of mice in my big coop… I suppose there is feed for them, grains and such. Do you folks have problems with mice, and if you do, what would you recommend to rid myself of the vermin? Would mouse traps be a problem with the chickens? I am somewhat unsure regarding the method(s) one would or should employ to eradicate the little fellows. If you have experience in this matter, or insight and are willing to share, I would very much like to gain from the collected experience of the kind folks here in the Utah thread.

probably not something everyone will do but my hubby likes to sit out by the coop with his pellat gun. He shoots them when he sees him. he says its great target practice. Wierd huh?

Oh my gosh hahaha! That sounds like something my hubby would do!

RJ, our main line of defense is the two cats we keep. Whenever I find a mouse, I grab it and toss it to them (please wear gloves) I'm also moving our feed into a couple of steel garbage cans I found in one of our sheds the other day. I don't like pests getting into the food.

In regards to the rooster on my profile, he is actually meant for the soup pot, but we love his color. I'm still training him on how to be a gentleman to humans, but I do like him. He's the son of my favorite roo, Sven.

I use a live mouse trap found at IFA. The first night I caught SEVEN! A few the next day, and now I rarely catch any. I also put mouse poison below my attached shed where they live.

Love these!! When I started seeing mice, I would put it out..with a bit of peanut butter in the middle..came out to 4 caught one day. 2 the next. I haven't seen mice in a while. Nor droppings. I caught the little buggers, :D all of their family I guess.

I use a bucket trap. I am able to place it right outside the fence from the coop so that the chickens don't bother it.
If you are diligent about opening and closing the coop every day you can put the bucket trap out at night as the mice are mostly nocturnal.

Lisa....I still have the Houdan girl that I got from you and she is gorgeous this year!

Awesome! My girls finally had a good molt and I think they just get prettier with age. Decent layers too, really surprised at that. I have one that is more white with black, and one that is darker with less white. The lighter one seemed to get whiter this winter. Glad yours has made it through. Several just did not make it to POL, but the ones that survived after that have done well thank goodness!

I have more Houdans coming the first week in March.:D I will sell a few, anyone wanting any let me know. I ordered female, last time 2/25 were boys so the sexing is nice. Crossies we have better health in this batch. If I end up with a boy....well.... we will see!

Hey Acemario!

Do you want some feed sacks or should I just toss them?

I have a bunch.
Ha! Thanks for remembering! Unless anyone on here wants a $10 chicken feed sack, I think you can recycle them. Thanks, though! Maybe on the next go-around. I still have a few left over from last time.
