Utah!

I do believe that R.C.'s birthday is coming up next week… he will no longer be a cockerel, he can advance to full Rooster status. I suppose we will have party and such, it is a big event and the neighbors and friends will most likely want to drop by. I looked back at pfrosty's thread and found a couple of his photographs of my prize winning Roo, Rooster Cogburn.

I believe we will either have crickets, worms, or those meal worms as a party threat. I see the girls out in little groups planning something special for the big guy. Around here we are looking forward to his big day with relish.

Drove out past the farm this a.m. and thought back to 1979/1980 time frame when dad and I planted our grain on his birthday, March 16th. This is the earliest we have heretofore planted grain in the Cache Valley. My garden is tilled from this past Monday, I could have planted crops late last week, this season is by far the earliest one our family has record of, and we have been here since 1859. Of course in the olden times they had not yet learned to plant fall grain, nor the ability to plant spring grain so early, horses are a bit slower you know.

I was hoping for blue skies again today, but will not complain one bit, nor will my birds. Somewhere down the road we will have to pay for this nice weather, but I will face it when the time comes… I am getting too old to worry both now, and then. Then will have to do.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

I would totally come to RC's birthday bash if I lived closer! Alas, I shall have to live vicariously through pictures and first hand accounts.

I got my new incubator to the temp and humidity I need. It is sooo tempting to put the eggs in now, but I already said I would wait until tomorrow to set them so that I can enter the HAL. I did get another Icelandic egg today, too, but a promise is a promise. It went toward some cupcakes instead, and it gave me the chance to see if the boys are still doing their jobs, anyway :) (they are) I am excited to spill the beans here about how many eggs I'll be setting!

Just put more silkie eggs on lock down today. Lost several the last few days that just quit for some reason. I always get a good number to develope but so many die before lockdown :( So now I have a total of 8 that look good and moving around. I put them in cut down egg cartons this time. Figured i'd try it for a change and see if it helps at all. I gave them an extra day to grow and I am going to keep the humidity a little lower this time. I hope it helps. Wish me luck :)

Almost two weeks old and we have all survived...I'm starting to sleep easier at night, and my girls (crossing my fingers there are no boys) seem happy and healthy. And thanks to my water heater going out, the recently moved into new, more spacious living quarters. Aaand...today, they finally started using the nipple watering system I introduced last week. My girls are growing so fast! They are sprouting feathers and are starting to look a little ridiculous :)

Just cleard the incubator after hatching my shipped eggs from Texas.
I ended up hatching 50% of the eggs I recived. I also ended up assisting one last night and if i wasn't so scared to assist, I probably could have saved another that was still moving this morning. I guess thats the big dilemma, when to help and when to wait.

Here's a few pics.

Lpeaslee, sweet babies! What breed(s) are they? I assisted one under my broody last year. It was my first time every hatching, and I really debated about it before acting. The chick has turned out to be a beautiful raven black EE, and appears very healthy. One hopes, right? I'm waiting for her to start laying any day now.

Sweet FBCM Babies Peaslee! I hope I can get mine to hatch. What did you do for humidity? These were the ones from ladycats right?

Just checked my calendar, the ones I have from her should
be due 3/16-17.

50 % is awesome for shipped eggs, let alone FBCM! Way to go!

First of all, Miss Houdan is doing great! She fits right in with the Triplet Towers, and they think she's pretty cool. Nevertheless, she has a new friend, Miss Leggy.

On another note, I LOVE THIS VIDEO!

I wasn't even thinking about the HAL when I set my eggs! I was just too excited!!! Oh well... Next one for sure! I think that would be so fun! Where do you hear about all of them?

This one popped up on the home page a few weeks ago, but if you go to the list of forums, you will see "hatchalongs" as a topic. They usually have one for each month! But don't get any ideas!!!!
