I posted these earlier, but for you I decided to repost.
I have a bearded dragon, and a leopard gecko. I hope to one day hatch lizard eggs, and fowl eggs. That is my dream home/job.

L&C, those chicks on the mama hen are to die for! This is to me, what it is all about. I have a photograph or two to share this evening as well. I've moved the nine chicks that I have so far this season to the big girl pen, sometimes more commonly referred to as a grow out pen. The three large fowl in the foreground are cleaning up the left over grain bits n' pieces the roosters let go to waste while they were using it as a jail. I love that the birds in general will clean up most everything the find. Anyway we slid the pen over a space and put the little wee ones into it. It was great and they really enjoyed the extra space. Chest bumping and chasing were the order of the day. Also they have their own dust bath in the near right corner of the pen. Clean fresh grass and a southern exposure for sunbathing round out the amenities of this local.





As can be seen above the little attached dog house seems to be working out well, when used in this application. The little pop hole keeps the enclosure snug and draft free for the most part. I like being able to view inside, without going inside, and I believe they enjoy the light. It took a bumped head or two for them to learn the difference between Lexan and the open air hole, but today the were able to scamper in and out on a chase, full tilt. Just so much fun to watch and enjoy seeing them learn and expand their skill. And yes the DW and I have a couple of chairs ringside to enjoy the celebration of life they exhibit with such zest each and every day.



Last, but by no means least, this is Larry, of Larry, Moe and Curley fame. Also one of our three French hens, even though Moe is a roo. And yes it would seem that into every life, some roo's must fall. When the birds are happy, mama is happy, when mama is happy… well, me too! I believe this grow out pen, moved every day or so, will be as good as a pullet can get.

Cache Valley folks--there is a place called Walton's at cache junction---feed is $10 for 50 pounds! It is great! The problem for me is they are open weekdays only, and I can never get out there during the week due to work. I have had a friend grab me some and I love it when I can get out there.
Cal's feed has been ridiculously cheap for months now. Before I preferred the short lay pellets 20% protein at IFA North (18.99, varies a little.) BUT CAL's price has been so much cheaper, we have been doing that for awhile. (13.99)

I like the big bales of pine shavings at IFA North/Hyde Park for brooders...they are smaller flakes.

I like the pine shavings at CAL for the coop. Bigger flakes and better price. And yup I feel the bales to make sure they are not loose. Tighter bales have lots more flakes, I swear!

Dog bisuits--IFA NORTH! $5 for a gigantic bag! It is ridiculously cheap!

IFA North---mash for chicks. Powdery for the new babies. Then I get the unmedicated at CAL for the older chicks. It is bigger chunks.

Diotomaceous Earth -- -Steve Regan. Cheapo there. (A bust for mites/lice but is great in the summer for flies and smell.)

TSC I have not made it to yet, it is on my list. I can't leave the house much so I would love to know their hours if anybody knows....are they open on Sunday? IFA here is closed Sunday...because I tend kids I have to go on Sundays sometimes if Saturdays are crammed with soccer. I have kids reffing, playing and coaching. I wish the IFA's were open Sundays.

We've been in the new TSC quite a few times already. Discovered it 3 weeks ago, I think? We stop in to see what chicks they have. They have not had a pullet bin when we've gone in like I've seen people mention for other stores. They haven't had anything very interesting.

We stopped by North IFA on Saturday and their chicks looked horrible. So sad.

steve regan is great. have been dealing with them for years now. they got all sorts of stuff for plants and such, green house supply etc.

so i think my little aussie is a roo, he acts like one and what he has of wattles are sure going red. had a feeling about him from day one. oh well that means more chicks down the line lol. my bramas are sure friendly. and i tried one of those horizontal nipples on the chicks and they just would not take to it. glad i just got the nipple.

It has been a pleasure to meet Crazy Sandy and see Brian again They both got some of the beautiful cuckoo Marans from me. Just waiting for liz to pick up hers. If I have any left I'll let everyone know if I have any left over

RJ, I love your plexiglass coop! That's a good idea. And your chicks look happy 'n healthy And I, too, love all of the support here. My husband thinks I'm nuts with all of the chicken stuff I talk about.

Birdman, how did you manage to rooster yourself twice? Bah :/

The current count at my house is currently two pips and four chicks. I put food and water in the brooder and enjoyed the ensuing investigation of what these mysterious new objects were, hehe.

Folks, this is not good. Not good at all. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza confirmed at Iowa farm with 5.3 million laying hens. That happens to be 10% of Iowa's laying hens. All 5.3 million laying hens must be culled. This is just devastating news.

Cynthia, that is the saddest thing. Uuuugh.

I was just getting on to post something interesting----kind of exciting for me....two of my older Houdans eggs hatched, none have ever been fertile--she is in with my frizzle blue Rooster. The first chick looks just like a Houdans in every way BUT it is BLUE with white instead of black with white. What a fun cross! five white toes and all. Crested---hoping it mottles like the black do, how pretty will that be? What if it frizzled on top of that? The second chick is just more black with a little white cap. Pics tomorrow, they are still sticky. Can't wait to see them in the morning.
