Well, my eggs are going into lockdown today... I have 15 wiggling babies (I started with 17, 2 were yolkers)... I hope a good percentage of them hatch for my first time

my very old 7 years polish girl einstein has been laying regular this year. And for the first time in her life is broody. She is too big to put Serama eggs under her so I am debating if I want to put babies under her or some fertile eggs. I am really shocked that a 7 year old chicken that has never been broody before would decide to be broody now. We have had her since she was a day old chick and is a true pet so I know her patterns pretty well. I moved my silkies and frizzles into a smaller coop with a run so they can go broody in peace. I hate it when the broodies take over a regular nesting box. Einstein I was not prepared for. This tells me no matter how much you plan the darlins can surprise you

I think this wait will drive my daughter and I insane and we're only on day 18! I couldn't stand it and had to candle. So far it was obvious that all 3 of our silkie/sgs had veins and 2 out of our 5 of our shipped legbars! So excited! I'm pretty sure I probably shouldn't have messed with them this early but the suspense was killing me. How often can I safely candle? It's a small batch so it doesn't take long.

sundance, I think that is so cool that your old girl wants to be broody. Wonder what kind of mom she will be. Glad she gets a chance. Man, 7 yrs..you've had her a long time. Lucky girl...both of you..ha...

Speaking of bunnies... Does or has anyone ever kept their chickens and rabbits together in the same run? We would like to get a rabbit and are concidering putting it with our birds. I've read articles about it, and apparently they do really well together. What do y'all think?

I let them run together sometimes but then input them back. I have the hutches in the coop to keep them from the weather. I put fodder in for rabbits and after they eat the grass the seeds fall to the chickens.
