Utah!

I didn't have much luck when I tried putting them up on blocks of wood. I think it works best when they have to reach slightly to put their beak in. For me the waste stopped when I hung them. I agree it would not work as well if the birds vary a lot in size.
My waterer is a little bigger, but I'm going to try to hang it like yours Neuport. The Marans love to roost on top of it and walk in it.

Congratulations!!! Pretty coloring. What breed?

It's a Rhode Island red (I believe) with salmon favorelle daddy

and yep, I have some ee mix eggs in there, and a couple leghorn x sf ... I can't remember what the light brown eggs are from... Brian would know ;)

i am out and about for a bit, but iexpect to come home with an ee hatched, and possibly one of the light brown eggs too.

Even with ducks, I found elevation is the key. Ducklings....well I had their feed & water in those commercial units on top of cookie sheets inset with a stainless steel rack. kind of like a cookie rack but 1/4 inch squared instead of horizontal wires. hope that makes sense. It worked to cut down the mess but they are ducks so....very MESSY.
When I moved them to the outside pen, I screwed some trough tray kind of containers to two stacked sections of 2x4 attached that to a flat wood base for stability. It raised the food dishes to about their neck level. Really cut down on the mess of feed in the bedding. I put their waters on top of castle stones, that helped. Now they are big enough to reach down into 2 & 3 gallon buckets for water so that helps keep the pen a bit dryer.
I did buy a length of nipple waterer pipe & nipples to be installed in their new palace but 1) its not built yet and 2) I haven't figured out how to actually install it. There was a guy on KSL selling it pretty cheap so I bought it. if it does not work for the Ducks -im told it will-- well if it doesn't then I'm one step closer to being ready for chickens next year LOL!

Love your idea sidewing. For me I was feeding them mostly fermented feed so a continual feeder did not work for me. Wet feed just doesn't flow LOL When I do get chickens they will get FF for sure. for now I am only giving the ducks FF in the morning and OUTSIDE their pen. They have managed to learn to make a huge mess with it again.
I dont think anything can prepare you for how messy 12 ducklings can be.

Wait..did you get your eggs from Brian?? lol..if so, that is the mix I have that went into lock down this morning. I have a RIR in there with his Faverolle roo as dad. I have two huge Leghorn eggs in there with that one as the dad..man, still a lot of room in those eggs, hope they do ok, I don't think they will hatch until day 22!
Congratulations! Several pretty blue/green eggs, and one that is a robin egg blue..hope that one hatches out a girl..of course!

I candled my eggs again this morning because after reading more on detached air cells, I was worried about my shipped eggs. All 3 from Lisa look great! I think 1 of my Legbars looks good, another has an air cell I'm worried about, one is hardly forming and the other 2 look like duds to me. :( I can't tell anything from my dark speckled egg.

Worried about that one with the air cell like that. :(

That's the one that looks good to me.

That one does not seem to be progressing as quickly and the air sack is off. Input on this one?

Those 3 are the same egg. I'm not seeing any veins but 2 separate looking masses.

Those 2 are the same egg and I don't see any growth.

I love coming down to the Ogden IFA. They always have so many more interesting chicks than we get in Logan! They have Hoydans and white crested blue polishes today.

Where does IFA get there chicks from, does anyone know? I bought a scicillian buttercup and a wellsummer (among many others) from the Preston IFA. Also got a welsummer rooster they were selling as a pullet. Just interested to know what the stock is like. One time I asked them where they get their chicks and he said somewhere probably about 100 miles from here.

The first five look good. It's hard to tell by photos. See how light the air sacs are showing up on those first 5? You can go by that pretty much on the others, having said that, by day 7 I can pretty much tell if they aren't good, but sometimes, if it's questionable I wait the suggested day 10 to toss. You will know for sure by then.
The one air sac that you are worried about, I've had worse looking ones..up higher, and hatch. :)

We asked the Ogden IFA and they said Privett and Dunlap hatcheries.
