Utah!

The funny thing is, they get their grain from Idaho near you! I need to get a new pic of that Marans roo. he's growing up nicely and is my daughters favorite. My kids have name him Capt K'nuckles.

You have a Marans roo? I would love to see him! I have three right now growing out. I hope I have at least one girl!

I see this all the time at Cal ranch. At one IFA they wouldn't even guess what was what. At least they were honest.

I haven't been impressed with Cal Ranch's chicks either although some of their supplies are priced better than IFA. Back in March the Hyde Park IFA didn't have much selection and what they had looked weak. I went to the Logan IFA and they had a much better selection, the birds looked great, and there is a young guy that works there that raises chickens and really seems to know what he is talking about. Anytime I have been in when he was there he has answered all my questions.

That's the only place I will buy it. 100 lbs. for 20 bucks! My chickens love it over the pellets. I will buy pellets every now and again, give it to them for different feed, but they love that feed from Leland Mills. We take a garbage can that I bought just for it. Here's my setup in the shed.
Anybody tried a mill in Ogden? I was talking to a rabbit breeder in Roy on Saturday and he recommended the mill there. I can't remember the name of the mill but he said there rabbit and chicken feed is much cheaper than the chains and it gets resold at other places for several dollars more per bag. I believe he said the chicken feed was around 10-11 per 50# bag.

Cynthia, I have two marans roos. I only bought three. Ha ha ha ha ha Gotta love it when it happens that way.

Bitsy, congrats on the babies!

We got five from this hatch. Cute little fluffies. Those little austro/BR cockerels are still up for grabs. Anyone? Anyone? ;)

Interesting! I'll have to go back. I went early in the season and the guy that was working told me that they only get what's preordered and that they piggy back off of Hyde Park so I never bothered going back.

I have a nice black Marans roo and I just got four more Marans. I'm pretty sure at least one is a Roo. I will get some pics.

When I went in in March and asked if they had chicks for walk-in sales, the guy at the counter said pre-orders only. But then he called up the young guy whose name I can't remember to take care of me. He was very nice, checked his orders, and told me he had enough extra of the four breeds I wanted plus some others if I was interested.

All this talk about sprouts and fodder, I though I would post a picture of my primitive set up. I had thought about an automatic rack but I'm not sure where I would put it so for now it's just 7 trays that I manually rinse.

The trays I'm using are recycled. When we moved here last summer the power company was running a promotion on LED lights so we were able to replace all our can lights for nothing. We had so many of the blister packs that the new lights came in I thought I would save them. You know, one is trash but 40 is cool!

So when we started the chickens I had the idea to repurpose the blisters as sprouting trays. I punched holes in one and then nested it in an intact one. Each pair makes a tray. I lift out the punched one and rinse over the sink, shake out the excess and put it back in the intact one. I feed them at 7 days so we have 7 sets. I am using wheat since I have a bit of it on hand and it is cheap. I think a tray costs about 10 cents.

Here is the mill I was talking about. The feed label I have says Cache Commodities. The website has both that and Cache Feeds. Anyone purchased there?
