Yes, I raised ten Bronze Broadbreasted turkeys two years ago and got hooked. I couldn't stand to kill them. I cried when my husband dispatched them. I live in turkey country and all the locals, including my husband said that turkeys are vicious and will attack anybody. Even my big old toms were so sweet and friendly. They sat under my lawn chair and talked to us through the window. So I decided to go with heritage turkeys so my husband wouldn't kill them. I told him they are "lawn ornaments". My grandaughter loves them! She's their guardian.

He he, you will need more than just one of these, you will discover ... other breeds, or see them, and want them! I've been through a few. I've decided on the bantams, I love the cochin and the silkie. My fav.

LF..love the egg layers. And, the EE, OE's. Puffy cheeks don't ya know. And now, I have some Marans growing out to watch. I may have a new LF favorite if the personalities stay the same.

I need to get a photo of my funny rooster. He is getting prettier. Only 5 months old, only crowed that one day. What? He is starting to stay around the hens more, will walk away when a hen goes after him, but not like he used to. When will this boy become a man? Come on Buddy, would love to see what a leghorn and he would make. Think the girls would lay blue/green eggs? And, if he gets a Marans girl in the future..an OE. That's if when he starts crowing more often, if ever again..

and starts to act like a man. And of course, if the collar works. If not, I will lose Buddy, and I am really liking his sweet personality. I can pick him up from the roost, no problem. He comes kind of close to me, but runs when I open the back door. That's where I throw the morning treats from. It's so funny to watch him run..so different than a girl.

My Marans roo is still pretty young, but he runs away from everything. I can't get close to him even with mealworms. And when I throw worms at him he runs. He will be the only rooster in the main flock so he better toughen up a bit.

Well, I've had my first progression death

it was one of my RIR x sf mix. It had a very good start too! But after not moving for a couple hours with that good of progress, I got concerned. It wasnt moving anymore, even being able to see feathers in there, i couldnt see breathing. Resisting the urge to help, I left it. Well, this morning there was no movement so I grabbed it out, and started breaking the shell, it had died, as I expected

I'm sorry to hear that. It's so hard to know what to do and if you do if you just have a weak bird to work with. We need Xray vision.

You have a Marans roo? I would love to see him! I have three right now growing out. I hope I have at least one girl!

This is one of the new Marans I got. I'm pretty sure it's a roo. His comb is twice the size of the other 3 I got. Bev Davis Wade Jeane line.

Hello, new here to BYC as well as to chickens in general. Thought I'd introduce myself (and I guess the household in general) since I'm sure I'll have many questions in the weeks to come (I've already collected a few).

Our neighbors have had chickens for several years now and after several years of chicken and egg envy, we finally decided to buy a coop and chicks this year. Our coop is currently a work in progress and, as far as chicks go, we have at least 8 too many! To be fair, we were told they were all straight run and we got 3-4 of each breed so we'd get a hen (which still isn't a guarantee).

Our little babies are in the house in a brooder they seem to be quickly outgrowing (we only got them Friday!). We have 4 Black Australorps (I'm suspicious they're actually all pullets since we got them from Cal Ranch and they rang up as pullets), 4 Bantam EEs, 3 Bantam Frizzles (possibly Cochins), and a Barred Rock/Frizzle mix (I drove all the way down to Spanish Fork for this one so hopefully its a lady). Everyone is about 3-4 weeks old, except the EEs which are only about a week.

In the end we'll need to narrow down our brood of 12 to just 4 chicks, one of each kind. We're anxiously waiting to see who in our brood might be roosters, since our city doesn't allow them. I swear I check on them at least 5 times a day, each time thinking 'is somebody in here looking/acting like a rooster?!'

(Speaking of, I'm just going to post this because I hear an EE chirping really loud. I need to check on those babies.)

That's the only place I will buy it. 100 lbs. for 20 bucks! My chickens love it over the pellets. I will buy pellets every now and again, give it to them for different feed, but they love that feed from Leland Mills. We take a garbage can that I bought just for it.

Welcome to BYC and the the Utah forum!

You can sell pullets easily on KSL once they feather out. I have had some luck selling roosters too for $5 or $8 for 2.

Welcome! check out the Easter Egger sexing thread if you have not yet, they help with sexing EE's very effectively. You really padded your odds with that flock.

Since I asked on the forum here I found two other friends that purchase from there and get really good egg production.

I am excited to hear this. I have about 200lbs of feed right now but will definitely be heading to pick some up. I got a bunch of feed from a place in Idaho through a neighbor that is a nice mix of grains but I think I made a bit of a mistake as it is not labeled by % and I think is is shy on calcium. I will continue to use it but supplement it liberally with commercial feed till I get through it.

Thanks for the welcome guys! I'll definitely check out the EE sexing thread. We got two of each chick color they had: so two chipmunk babies and two blue/beige babies. One of the chipmunks has paler stripes and one of the blue/beige ones has a tail and the other doesn't.

I won't have any problems re-homing the Black Australorps at least. Our neighbor said he'll take the extras... But for some strange reason he wants nothing to do with my little bantams (okay, it's not strange, he only wants egg production hens and the bants are too small).

I'll definitely post up some ads on KSL when I figure out who we're keeping.
