Utah!

Very interesting. They are beautiful birds in their own right, but I guess it is the darkest brown eggs that really set them apart. So you focus on blue because they are laying good eggs for you, but when folks want to buy chicks they are asking for black? The blue are so beautiful. I surprised that people ask for more black. It looks like I need to sell, cull, or trade out my clean leg, cuckoo, and blue roo. At least the clean leg and cuckoo are pullets, should make it easier. This golden cuckoo is amazing though. From JPS poultry. They sell show grade stock. This is very helpful, thank you!
I keep Wheaten Marans, Blue Copper, Black, SPlash, Golden Cuckoo....all hens in the same pen--- then I use the Blue CM eggs for my breeding stock to get more blue black and splash...You can just add a drop of food coloring to the vent of the hens you want to use for chicks, then you can tell whose eggs are whose if you want to keep the other breeds in the same pen :D The GCM hens make black/blue sex link chicks so they are nice to have!

@abkoldewyn-- just to let you know....the "white" showgirls will likely be lavender--I have had a tons of those so far--or they can also come in blue or splash. I should not get pure whites from those pens, and all the chicks that have been white at birth have gone one of those three colors so far :D The lav ones are beautiful! Congrats on a great hatch, that is awesome all your eggs are hatching!

The little silvery chipmunks are what my 2nd one looks like now that it's dried. Both silkies, no showgirls. Cuties! What do you call that color? Lavender chipmunk?

when looking at marans i know for me i would want the darkest eggs the most
That seems to be what most folks want and what I got them for in the first place. Thanks!

Food coloring! Great idea! I will give the GCM a chance and see how dark her eggs are for sure.

They should be silver or possibly blue partridge. The 1st and 2nd feathering are very interesting they change a TON! I have been getting lots of silvers..black down with silver tips, really pretty.
The whites end up mostly lavender.

Sorry I addressed you in a post earlier, I meant Amanda...with you both hatching these chicks I got them mixed up lol!
