Huh. I LOVE it when people lie about a sale. $10 is so worth that, right? What is wrong with people?? Did it have puffy cheeks at all a a new chick? The legs don't look at all slate colored, or is it just the picture?

Nope, no puffy cheeks (though I knew some EE have clean faces) and the legs might be a little on the blue side but not very. They certainly aren't pink, yellow, or black. They're some weird greyish purple color. It's hard to describe.
I'm feeling rooster on it now. Someone's comb is suspiciously red today. Why? What am I supposed to do with a tiny mongrel roo? And why does he have to be so darned good tempered and cute?

That's sad. It may have been sold to them that way too. When you are new to chickens and you buy ameraucana's from a hatchery for example, you have no idea. And then you feel like an idiot when you find you've been duped. But if they know better than it sucks that they lied.

Ha ha ha I need to spray a few chickens for digging up my carrots. Seriously, I've replanted 6 times. And I need to plant try again tomorrow. grrrrr

Speaking of gardening, since I know you love it, have you ever noticed different kind of potatoes sprouting at totally different rates? I planted two colors of potatoes, yukon gold and some red new potatoes. The yukon gold came up a month ago, and are thriving. I was about to replant the reds, but when I dug one hill, the were just sprouting! ha ha The lazies...

I have not let my chickens out near my garden yet and wondered how it would go if we did. Everything is still pretty little in the garden so maybe I'll wait.

There are three genes for feathered legs; none are sexlinked (meaning that they come from BOTH parents). Two are incompletely dominant; meaning that if present in the bird, they will show. They cannot be hidden, and one two copies will have more feathering than a single copy. One gene is recessive. Pti^1 has two foot feathered alleles as well as the wild-type not-foot feathered allele; Pti^1B is found in brahmas; Pti^1L is found in langshans.


The new kits are starting to get some fur. I'm thinking Seal or Siamese Sable.

I got my "ameraucana pullets" from the AF Cal Ranch too.

But they are so stinking cute! I think mine are LF though. But I guess you never know until they grow out. They are of course EEs.

Look at those adorable little box chicks! We should have just bought the LF variety but someone in my family only wanted bantams... We had 4 to start and have already gotten rid of 3 because they were turning out to be boys... Now just the one left who also looks like a boy.
My family always says, 'If there wasn't bad luck, we wouldn't have any luck at all.'

Hopefully we'll be getting a broody chicken from our current brood so we can hatch some bantam EE eggs on our own. I feel we'd have better luck.
I guess I could always try to keep the tiny roo and breed him to some true Ameraucana hens to get smaller EEs. But that would involve trying to hide that we have a rooster, which would not go smoothly if he gets mean during puberty.

You'll have to let us know how they turn out.

Sidewing, those kits are getting cuter and cuter. Just love how their ears are puppy sized when they are first born.

I mean to never let my chickens near my garden. My sons keep leaving the gate open, and so the chickens take the oportunity. Luckily it is only ever the one section. I'm debating whether to pull out more decorative shrubs next year to expand the garden. I prefer vegetables over bushes. We had a huge garden section in our back yard, but I just can't make it chicken proof, and I need to free range them to save $$ on feed.

Also... If I'm understanding this genetics thing correctly, Brahmas have one of the unhideable genes? So this baby has to be from a sexlink. I think it is a boy, as his comb is pinning up. It is early days, though. He's only 3 weeks. I'll try to get a picture. He is wild looking.

What kind of dwarfism is the Bantam gene? I think it's recessive so you would need to breed two generations to get the bantams. There is one dominant kind of bantam/dwarfism gene that is sexlinked and operates like the barring gene.

I thought I once saw a post about a list of chickens that will not tear up a garden, but I never read it. I was wondering if you had some breed that were easy on gardens. Instead what you have is kids like mine. I asked my 12yo to mow the back lawn last night. He was taking a long time bringing the mower around. Finally he emerges from the back door of the house WITH THE MOWER!

I have a few little ones that need homes.

A little NN/BO roo that is 8 weeks old. This little guy is super sweet! He came from Dizzywitch's eggs that my son's class hatched. I'm super bummed that we can't keep him, but no roos allowed.

I also have one too many standard blue Cochins, also 8 wks old

. I'm 90% sure that they're girls.

Last but not least, two, 4 wk old blue orpington chicks. I'm not sure on their gender yet... But I'm leaning toward girl.
I don't have pics of them, but can easily get them if you're interested.

I love the blue cochins! I love blue chickens. Such a great color. I'm swimming in chickens right now otherwise I would take one.
