Utah!

The lovely DW just captured a nice view of her new Brown Red Modern Game rooster up in the hanging planter on the west side of the banty coop. A pretty if somewhat gangly creature if I ever saw one. I thought to question her taste… but soon thought better of it and I shall remain moot.

I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it is hard for me to figure in the value of the cuteness factor. Nonetteless this is Karole's prize roo. Went to Idaho Falls for a drive today, nice fall weather and beautiful trees along the Snake River.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

that is around the size of egg i get from my bsl girls :) hey what about some geese? some can make great layers i am told and the eggs are great and geese make great flock protectors too so that might help with some of your other issues that keep happening. hope your dh feels better soon

Good to know about the BSL's! Thanks :) I wouldn't mind geese, but they are strictly off limits until we get to Delta because we're worried they would bite people walking by here. The ducks were supposed to be off limits, too, but then the duck fairy came this spring, lol! Of course, ducks aren't known for hauling after people and biting......

I have been tempted before by emus. I understand they make excellent guard animals and I think they'd make a roving dog think twice. Likewise, I wouldn't mind expanding the horse corral and just having the chickens wander in there. Our one horse hates dogs and would probably keep them away from the birds.

i have always wanted emu. i think they would be a lot of fun. and yes i have heard they are great guard animals :) donkeys also make fantastic guard animals, i am sure you have seen the picture of one that is proudly holding up its coyote kill. they will stomp them into the ground. yeah i understand about the geese lol. i would love some but they are so loud. but yeah they will sure go after people lol. but yeah i like your idea about expanding your horse corral. i assume your horses dont mind chickens and your other birds. and as gross as this may sound they might make use of any undigested grains and spilled grain and hay and such. could be a good thing. my bsl's have been so amazing. calm birds that have great feed to egg ratio. even with them meant to lay like crazy they have not burned out on me yet. they are also great at finding their own food and staying safe. i only had one i did not like. but yeah the eggs are huge. wish i had a picture of them. i have even had one with 4 yokes in it once lol. great winter layers too. maybe its the strain from this hatchery or maybe i am lucky or maybe thats the way they are but that is my experience with them.

He's very regal. Me, I prefer fluff. My daughter likes them because she thinks they look like velociraptors. Hmm... Maybe if all the bantams I hatched this fall turn out be roos I should consider one. How are the modern games temperament/noise wise?

They make the cutest noises! The hens we got make a funny little noise and the roosters' crows are much shorter and quiter than the serama boy we brought home.

Our BRMG definitely looks like a velociraptor when he frills up his neck feathers. Ours are all pretty mellow and chill in our hands with the exception of one roo whose fine once we get him picked up but is a brat when trying to catch. The modern games are definitely growing on my husband quickly but we just have too much on our plates right now with school to have 2 additional pens of birds. I was thinking we could get into showing them until I found out what dubbing was and that it was required for showing. If anyone's serious about wanting a trio of them (I have brown Reds and birchens), please shoot me a message.

This guy actually wanted to hold baby chicks this morning! He usually wants nothing to do with them. Too cute. <3 Unfortunately, we lost 2 that just weren't thriving. They weren't really walking around well since hatching so it didn't come as a surprise, just sad. Down to 2 blues and 2 blacks.

Super cute!

Those are some gorgeous birds, Sid!

Thank you!

Your SLW's are AMAZING looking.
Thank you, but I have to give the credit to Jerry Foley on these birds. The next generation quality is on me though.

Wow. Congratulations! What is your medium and long term goals with them? They look beautiful!
Medium term is to do a staggered hatch and try to get 30-40 chicks growing out for selecting 3-6 good pullets and a fine backup cock bird. Once I have a good breeding group I will be selling eggs and chicks. I know it's a little risky to only have a pair of them around. Makes me nervous.

My long term goal is to sell some chicks and breeding groups so that we can have some amazingly beautiful SLW in this state. I think the popularity of the SLW has suffered because of the hatchery grade stock most folks have. If most chicken keepers could see these high quality SLW in real life they would have to have some in their flock. At least that's my opinion.

The dubbing process sounds horrific but isn't as bad as it seems. I had one dubbed last year. It didn't seem to give him any pain which surprised me, there was some blood but it stopped bleeding quickly and healed very fast. I showed him 4 weeks after dubbing and he was reserve best in show of over 1000 birds
