Utah!

  • rcstanley the Brown Red rooster is quite young still, a cockerel for quite some time I think. He will fill out and need to be dubbed if the DW wants to take him to the county fair or other such. I often don't dub for around the place. I wish the standard would be updated to reflect the fact, that we no longer fight these birds, and so do not need the dubbing. They are, to me a bit different from banties, reserved and somewhat aloof in their social interactions. Did I tell you they are tall for a small bird! I still can not quite get used to the size of them in height.
the-bird-man I picked up four sacks of BOSS from Cal Ranch over the weekend, thanks for the tip and pointer. I too believe you will soon have a rabbit or two in your hat.

For those following the saga of the wart upon my finger… I am still glugging a swig or two per day and applying it topicaly to said wart. No change as of yet. If I finish off the jug of ACV w/mother and there is still no change or improvement, I suppose I will give up on the claims and file this remedy under 'old wives tale.' But I want to give it the old collage try first. Sometimes these things can be stubborn. Have any of you used Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother for medicinal purposes? Cynthia's timely post gave the promise of many cures from the use of it. Some say it works on chickens, but I've not seen a chicken with a wart. I almost wish I had nail fungus, where as it is noted (among other things) as being able to clear this up as well. I suppose I will just deal with the problem at hand and go from there. But bottom line… no change is size, color nor shape thus far.

Anyway with the many leaves I have down, and the moisture we received overnight, my place has that hummus autumn smell, it is that time of year I suppose.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ, I am following your experiment with interest!

Although I have to say, I would prefer sagebrush for foot fungus problems. You boil the brush and then use the juice as a foot soak. I've use it before for a sore on DH's foot and it seemed to help :) If anyone uses this method, do NOT drink the juice, as the same stuff that helps your feet heal is toxic if ingested.

Sorry, that's my two cents on foot problems......

Oh this will be pretty interesting, we have our own Utah Thread research now haha ! I will be quite curious to follow the progress. I have always felt like it helps keep my skin clear from blemishes and cross my fingers it has good anti-aging properties. I have taken ACV off and on for twenty years. I especially like to make salad dressings with it. sometimes I like it on boiled potatoes. (weird I know). I am a sauerkraut and pickle loving nut though so the acidity is right up my ally. Pretty much everything at my house (Pizza, sandwiches, salads, and the like) has those pickled yellow peppers on it :D I will hope/root for progress but if our old ACV lets us down in regards to the wart it will be good information going forward. Good luck!

Well not to advert any undue attention away from my 'medical condition,' but I was wondering if anyone here has used or tried one of those flock blocks. I got one, but my birds seem to not be interested in it, in the least. I suppose I am getting less from it, than from my medical experiment with ACV w/mother. But time will tell.

It is time to find a home for my cute little banty chicks, I have nine from two hatches, they are fully feathered and were born around August 6th or so. They are a mix, but are free. About half and half on the sexing. I also have a Serama hen or two that I would like to rehome. I have a few BBR OEGB that I could part with as well… I have my eye on some birds out in Vernal that have me wishing I had more room. So if I happen to have a bird you have an interest in, now would be a good time to ask. All of these birds are free of charge, if that matters to whom ever would have an interest in them.

Always trying to improve the world, one bird at a time.

Let me share tonights saga. I have 4 birds in various stages of bumblefoot healing, I started with the worst one who is also the most wild. It was late inthe evening so brought her in the bathroom, cleaned her feet, soaked them in the solution once she of course pooped ....multiple times. Then on to the next one, my poor moulting girl, feathers everywhere. On to my slightly less moulting, spazoid Red. She is almost done with the process when I see egg leaking out of her. My first paranoid mom thought "oh my gosh I broke an egg inside of her!!!!!" no wait, there is a piece of soft shelled egg on the ground too.....ok, not as bad as I thought, trying to get her cleaned up, what is hanging out of her vent, pulling it out, a long ribbon of...the rest of the totally flexible and fabric like egg shell? I am exhausted.

That sounds rough! And more exciting than my night. I've just been working on a little coop. Almost ready for paint on this one.

Newmarch, sounds like you have had a day. Hope your girls get better.

I've not tried the flock block as of yet. My girls are so spoiled that they don't even pick at the fresh veggie scraps I give them half the time :/
