Utah!

iPick, what Modern Game Birchen's do you have? I don't remember if you have a rooster or not to go with your hens. Also how are the Modern Games doing in the garage, are they looking ok with that for protection? I am slowly taking somewhat of a fancy to them. They are hands down the DW's favorite birds, even over the French Hens we got from Lisa. We will have to see how the birds weather this winter.

Has anyone bought or made an automatic pop door opener? Did you like it? Did it do ok in the snow?

I'm going to pay someone to watch my pets and I'm trying to make things as simple as possible.

I have 2 automatic doors. one I really like and the other is not so good. The one I really like is recommended on backyard chickens. The door swings open and closed. it works great in the winter, The one I don't like is a doThat one does not work well at all

I have two EEs from the feed store that I purchased in April. Either they are not laying yet or they are laying brown eggs. That's 9 months old!
I feel your pain.... We got all our birds in May and now none of them are laying. Jessie used to be laying but she stopped about five or six days ago after laying every other day for about a week. She was doing so well! One nicely shelled egg every day, now nothing. I was hoping she would just truck through it.

Jamie is completely recovered. No signs of infection, so all is well in bird land. Everyone is enjoying the warmer weather, but my frizzled cochin continues to sleep under the other birds. The roosting poles are low enough for her to get on, but I guess too low so she just tucks herself up under Jessie and Jamie's chest feathers when night comes. As long as she doesn't cozy up under their butts!

Morning all, nice enough day to get me out working with the birds!

The offending birds (Turkeys) reside in Mendon, please come and get them.

I'll let my neighbor and my cousin know, maybe they'll take a trip up there to get rid of those pesky gobblers if/when they get some tags.

My birds seem to be going through oyster shell faster now that it's winter. Is that normal? I guess It could be the group of cockerels that I have coming up. Maybe they are eating it as they grow?

I've wondered if mine may be using it as some of the grit for in the gizzard. When the ground is covered/frozen it makes it harder for them to find the little pebbles they need to digest the full seeds. I've wondered if they may be trying to use the oyster shells in place of the little rocks they'd eat normally. But that's just been my guess.

Good thinking Frmboy. I haven't had snow on the ground but for maybe 5 days total. Melted pretty quick here. Could have been during that time though, I will have to keep that in mind.

Maybe I need to put a box of rocks in the coop.

Birds will eat anything hard, to replace not being able to graze on small rocks. So yes even roosters will eat shell if suitable grit is not available. I offer a reddish grit that is labeled for pigeons, but works well enough for chickens. I procure it from IFA. The cost is quite cheap compared to the smaller bags sold at Cal Ranch or inside the store at IFA. These bags are kept in the warehouse and are not on display. I have found that several items suitable for bird keepers, are not on display in most stores, you have to either 'know' of them or happen to ask the right question to a member of their sales staff. They (IFA) also have what I consider nice oyster shell in the back warehouse as well.

This being the one-hundredth year since Einstein published his Theory of General Relativity in the fall of 1915, I have been reading several articles and tributes regarding this. I wonder if there are any other closet science buff hidden here among the BYC bird keepers? I have read that E=MC2 is the most quoted equation of all time. I certainly admire him and all of those of advanced intellect. I can only pause and wonder what it might be like to be so gifted. Alas, it is not a problem of which I am saddled.

However I am working of a Theory of General Chicken Relativity, of which I suppose I am near to having prepared for publication shortly. I have worked it down to something like this: C=nB2. "C" represents the number of coops, n is to represent the Number of birds/chickens, and of course 2 is the squaring of that value. It is somewhat like Albert's theory in as it is short, compact, and precise. I must give him a big nod in setting the basic stage for this equitation, but the "Chicken Math" is all my own.

I know that some of you are or have been affected by Chicken Math, and I am pleased to offer an elegant equation to remedy this situation. SO, in simple terms, what this means is that the number of coops required for your flock is equal to the (n) number of birds squared. Walhalla… there it is: C=nB2.

So, though I do not expect immediate acceptance of my calculations, I believe in time I shall be proven correct in my efforts to establish in a simple form, the much needed mathematical solution for the problem that has vexed bird keepers for centuries. Perhaps in a hundred years they will be talking of this in much the same way as Alberts contribution to mankind. I have today sent said paper off for peer review.

Another nice day in Cache Valley,
Best to all and your birds,

Blast from the past!

Things with my chickens have been so boring that I haven't had anything to say. I did get solar powered lights for supplemental lights this year, which has been an interesting experiment. I think I need more because on gray days like this, the lights are dim at night and probably aren't enough to really work. But, I LOVE that there's no fire danger at all with them.

I only have one hen laying right now. Ironically enough, my best layer has been my silkie. Bizarre, right?

I have two FBCM cockerels up for grabs if any of you guys want them. Free, even though they have great bloodlines and I think will make exceptional roosters.
