Our last easter egger laid her first egg 41 weeks to the day of her hatch. Some of the biggest eggs we've gotten from any of the chickens. It's amazing how long some of them take.

Congrats!!

I wish we had a blue egg layer.

Yeah, but at least with a chicken egg, you don't have to pay to send it to college (or braces, or piano lessons...).

I *might* want to get a couple BO's from your order. Thing is, I'm terrified of the brand new babies. I'm much more comfortable when they're about four weeks or older. I'll have to think on it for a while. When are you ordering?

hehehe.... BO chicks are so much easier than college bound babies! Nothing to be afraid of at all....

Looking at my calendar, I was thinking I'd have them come around the first of March...

Sheepman, have you looked into ksl.com classifieds? locally, craigs list is not used as much as ksl.com. good luck.

Is this an estate sale or something?

When my dad died, we contracted with a guy in Ogden who did a lot of auctions. He hauled all of the stuff to his place, then he gets what he can, takes a percentage, and gives you the rest.

I'm a newbie, and have a couple of questions. What types of breeds does Cal-Ranch sell? Who else in Utah County sells day-old chicks?

Are you looking for specific breeds? Where in the valley are you located? I'm in N. Utah County - last year, the IFA in AF & Cal-Ranch in AF both carried most of the popular standard sized chicks - Rhode Island Reds, White Leghorns, Barred Rocks, various sex links, Americana/EEs, and Astralorps (I think, and maybe Buff Orpingtons). I wasn't looking for silkies or bantams, so I don't recall if they carried them or not. Call your closest feed store and ask to speak with whomever it is that orders their chicks - you might be able to request something they don't normally order.

Have you checked KSL.com's classifieds section for Poultry/Gamebirds? A few sellers on there are located in Utah County, and one who lives in Price but comes up to deliver chicks every week (if I remember right, he had more of the unusual breeds). If this is is anything like last year, in the next month or so there'll be a ton of new listings for day-old chicks, pullets, etc.

edited to add: Also, if you want something from a local breeder, there's the Utah Fancy Poultry Association. There's a link further up that will take you to their website - they have information about local breeders, although I'm not sure if they'll give that information out to non-members - wouldn't hurt to contact them. http://sites.google.com/a/larsencreek.com/ufpa/ufpa-poultry-club-calendar I can't get this link to work right, but that is the correct address if you paste it in manually.

Happy Trails on State Street in Lehi also sells chicks during the spring. I got mine towards the end of May. They had Rhode Island Red, Barred Rock, Black Austrolorps and Easter Eggers.
