Utah!

Oooohh... I'm jealous. My peep squad is just getting started. They're a month older than the Delawares. The Delawares aren't even squatting yet. But they are cute. The two Delawares I got from you are inseparable, and it is the cutest thing I have ever seen.

That one that is almost all white still bites. The one that had a lot of black on it did turn out to have a lot of coloring. That was sort of the point of picking one with a lot of black, and one that was mostly all yellow, so I am happy with the way that turned out.

"I'M A DADDY!!"

Congrats and well done!

I mentioned maybe a buff orp roo but that was if I took a couple peeps and one just happened to turn out roo. However, I shouldn't even consider my coop is maxed. Still haven't let my roo's "free range" unattended yet.... that really hurts.

I do have a couple questions for anyone that might know the answer?

1) I have 4 beautiful Americana's (fm IFA amazingly). One has a muff and beard like I've never seen, if she was a he the name would be ZZ Top. Has a tail tho. Does an extremely full face mean anything? Definitely a hen.

2) You know the "I laid an EGG" squawking? I have a banty barred rock roo that does it. He's a for sure full of testosterone roo. Has anyone had a roo do that?

3) or sorry, just added one more question... Can you feed raw hamburger to chickens? I had some that might have thawed a little then refroze (fm a deep freezer door left open...grrr...kids!). I could probably cook it and give it to the dogs but wondered if chickens can have it? We give them worms all the time, but this is obviously different.

My girls have finally provided us with 3 little beginner eggs! My daughter and I dance around like Christmas

; everyone else rolls their eyes. Only a chicken lover gets it.

They are white eggs so it's one or both of my youngest hens interestingly enuf, (leghorns).

I'll try to take some pics of the Americana and the coop my DH just built. It's so cute! Ohhh.. speaking of coop building. We have some extra very nice lumber left over, enuf to build even a large coop. I'll give someone fm this group a deal if they could use it. We are going to put it on KSL but want to give ya'll a chance and for cheaper.

I've given my chickens raw hamburger before. It was like meth-laced candy for them. They loved it, no ill effects.

They also treat the top layer of my compost bin like a deli. Particularly if there are half-rotting tomatoes.

Yes, actually it does! It means that her eggs will be bigger, bluer, and make you more proud than any of your other hens!

Ok, no, I don't think it means anything.

Sorry, never had a roo long enough

I'd say go for it.
You might even want to re-freeze it first for hot days like today.
I took a 1/2 watermelon and froze it. Gave it to my ladies this week. They loved it, and it took them most of the day to finish it...
Ahh... cool....

I get it! Congrats!

durrrr me!

As for feeding the hamburger frozen -- it already is. I would only know about it because some veggies went into a frozen ball. But awesome idea feeding it raw - thank you! Give them some entertainment when we can't let them out. I'll do that with the veggies as well.

Thanks!!

If you want to see something REALLY funny, give them some boiled corn on the cob (don't butter it). Once they get over their initial fear of it, they'll fight over it and it will be funny.

I'm planning on hanging up the next couple I give them.

I cut the cob into three or four pieces and that allows them to pick it up and run off with it. Then another chicken will grab it an run off in another direction. If you cut up a couple of cobs they are all running around like crazy it's a blast.

Oh yeah, did I ever tell you about the time my parents came over to roast hot dogs? My mom broke one in half getting it on the stick, and mistakenly left the other half on the table. That was a dinner gone horribly awry....

Also, if you ever happen to leave pizza with really melty cheese where a chicken can get it, that is quite amusing as well.

*sigh*

I'm so sad. I'm away from home and my chickies are growing so fast. Plus the housesitter was an idiot and left the big dog, Maggie, outside as he was helping the chicks into the coop for the night (they're not quite big enough to get up into it them selves) so Truffle, my welsummer, got out of the chicken run and Maggie got her. At first the house sitter said it was my youngest's bird, Belle, a cuckoo marans. So I called the lady I got the birds from in the first place and she hooked us up with another Marans. Once I got the new pic from the hous sitter did I realize that he told us the wrong bird had been killed. I'm so sad, I was very excited about the Welsummer, she was so pretty and just getting her biggirl feathers... But now I"ve got two marans and two salmon feveroles. (I want to go get more Welsummers though, don't tell DH)

Although the new bird, aka Darth Clucken as the house sitter calls her, taught the others to get up into the coop by them selves. So she's got that as a redeeming quality. I've also been told that she is the first to want to hop up into a lap when offered the chance. Seriously, electric fence here we come for the birds! no more doggies getting my babies. NOT COOL!
