Wow, thanks Speckled! I think I will look even further into this. I've been wanting a pure black "true" Ameraucana for a while. I know that this gal I bought the eggs from has been breeding them for a while..soo...? Thanks again..

I take it you got your wind earlier, it's just happening here...Spanish Fork. Where are you? We had the warning, thought it would hit yesterday or today, it's pretty windy now, hoping it doesn't get worse, because when it does, we usually get power outage, and I have eggs in the bator..plus, it's going to get cold tonight, we would have to get the extra heavy blankets out! Plus, my babies are out there, but they have a warm mama.

Did you get any damage?

Hi everyone! I'm in Washington, Utah. We have had wind here where I am but nothing like you have had up north! Hope all of you are safe and your chickens too. This is my first year with chickens and I'm finding they don't really like the wind. Mine were in the coop most of the day. I have 4 silkies, one Ameraucana, one WC bantam Polish, and an EE. We are suppose to have some cold weather coming this weekend. I don't have a heated coop so i"m hoping my girls will be alright. I hate the cold!

How cold in Washington...that's pretty close to St. George...aren't you guys pretty warm compared to us? My chickens don't mind the weather clear down into the 40's, its the low 20's and down to 8 degrees at night that I'm starting to worry about..supposed to happen this week!

i am in west jordan and i have not had much damage that i can see so far. i am happy there is not any leafs on the trees because i am sure there would of been a lot more trees down. last night i went and tied up everything i could. i worry about those of you who heat your coops because with so many places with the power gone it can be deadly. i do not heat so i am good. i need to get around to fixing my generator i got but life has been busy. cynthia for your bator you can always get a power inverter for your car so you can keep it plugged up. i am fairly sure your car would not need to be started

We are suppose to get down to 27 on Saturday night. Day times are still in the 50's. The- bird - man it's good to hear you haven't had to much damage and thanks for answering my doubts about not having a heated coop.

you are welcome. i had to heat my coop in february when i got my girls until it got warm because the guy i got them from heated his coop and i will never do it again! they do not need it, chickens did not have heat for years because there was not power and even when there was power a lot of people did not see the need for heating a coop.

Good to know. My silkies sleep on the floor and I like to leave the small door open out into their run but I worry about drafts on them. Electric doors are so much money that I am resisting getting one.

But..but..my chickens need heat. I baby my babies.

They still have frost bite, and no, there is no humidity in there..it's still cold, just not down into the 20's.

You are probably right, if I hadn't started the heat lamps, they may not need it. I also keep the little door open on the bottom. hmm...wonder if I have a picture of my coop. Will see..

Well, here it is before my DH put a tarp on the end of the coop area, which he added this fall. Notice the top of the coop has a triangle opening..it's on both ends. You can't see the little door on the bottom because of the big door being open..no heat yet at this time.
