Utah!

Nice coop! I wish I had the space to make my run bigger. Did you build your coop? Very nice. I've been keeping my chickens in form free ranging because I went out to take them a treat 2 days ago and there was a young hawk on my fence 10 feet from my chickens. Scared me and the chickens to death. I live in a neighborhood and thought my chickens were safe. So glad I came out when I did. Now I go out and sit with them if I let them out. I would love to have your run for my chickens!

i am not saying its horrible to heat, i am just saying that i do not think they need it and i feel it has a lot of risk. if you want to heat then that is great, i just wont do it and i will not suggest to anyone that they heat. i have done things like useing black shingles that heat the coop and i do have a heated water base but i do not use any other kinds of heat

I'm in a neighborhood too, and, had a hawk make a dive right into the top of that chicken wire. Now, what's up with that? I thought they had better eye sight than that. Anyway, was stuck for a bit, the chickens were making all sorts of alert sounds, and thank goodness they were in..it was winter, then it finally got loose.
I do let my chickens out in the back yard when the weather is good..no snow..even then, if I shovel a path, the brave ones can come out. If I see a hawk, I bribe them back into the coop run with treats. Haven't seen any lately. That's a good thing!
Oh, and yes, my DH made my coop. He cemented the fence posts right into that ground. It's pretty solid. If you notice, there is a small, what I call nursery hutch behind the bigger coop. And, to the left side, is another coop and run, not as big, for my broody mom and babies. If I don't have a broody mom, then I put the larger babies in there to have a place to run...hmmm..maybe I have I picture of that one too.

I know what you're saying..to each his own. And you know what this makes me think of? Now this may change the subject..but, just like dog food.

When did dogs start eating dog food? When did chickens start eating bagged chicken food? And, when did chickens start running for a heater somewhere? lol... guess I didn't change the subject..but I think it's interesting how marketing has made so much money on unnecessary things..dog food for dogs over weight. For dogs that allergic..ha, guess what they are allergic to? My chickens get to free range in my back yard. Thank goodness for a sweet DH, because he doesn't care for the poop in the yard, but hey, I found that using the hose, and watering it down works quick! Yes, they get the bagged chicken food and the heat. But, they do get to come out in the day, and they do, during the cold, and they do just fine. At least, so far so good.

that is a very good point. i use bagged chicken feed. i guess its just about how natural you/your pets and animals want to live.

hattie - I'm in Hurricane, we had some WIND! Don't know the mph, but 3/4 of the Dairy Queen sign is gone. And most of my outdoor holiday decorations got mangled. Glad to "meet" another local chickeneer.

Cynthia - Good point about the dog food, etc. When we ran out of dog food a few days before pay day, I mixed up some rice, beans, cornmeal, cooked wheat, oats, and beef broth. They loved it! Both lab mixes. I don't know if it would be more cost effective to just make my own all the time, but they certainly had baaaaaad gas (worse than normal

) until payday!

I just bought some chicken scratch at IFA cuz I've read that it helps fatten up birds during cold months. It has less protein in it than their feed. What gives? Maybe I just read into the posts too much?? I'm glad they've got the corn and we always give them food storage wheat and oats, but where could I find dried corn to feed?

ipispatch, it was some crazy wind wasn't it.
Hey I was into the St.George Ace hardware today and in their pet food area they had a huge bag of scratch for 13 something ( sorry can't remember the exact price ) and they had a bag of dried cracked corn by their bags of bird seed. Can't remember the price sorry but you might check there. You have a Ace in Hurricane right? I don't know if your store is big enough to carry chicken feed though but they should have the corn I would think.

I am in LOGAN, I have an Olive Egger born in April 2011, anybody want her? She is FREE! She needs to be taken out of our flock, she has become the head honcho and I have alittle bantam that she is beating up. I think if she is out of her element in a new flock she will be fine, she is super sweet with people and most of the other chickens. Email me if you are interested
